Ford Focus 1.6tdci 2009 Overboost

Featured Replies

Good Afternoon All,

My son's Ford Focus has a Overboost on Forscan each time he drives it, It seems to drive ok and there doesnt appear to be any issues power wise. The turbo has been on the car for approx 2 months and covered approx 2000 miles, there is no play in the turbo and there is no oil oil any foreign objects. When the turbo was changed I changed the 2 feed pipes for best practice, changed the oil and filter. I changed the turbo as I was planning on a Stage 1 remap and with the 125k on the car on its original turbo I thought it worth while. All of the injector seals have been checked, the actuator appears to move freely although there isnt much movement in them anyways and there are no  boost leaks as I have completed a smoke test. Any ideas could be causing the overboost on Forscan?

Was the new actuator setup correctly?

It was supplied and fitted with the turbo, I’ve made no alterations to it? Should I? If so how?

any help would be very welcome

Is it VNT or wastegate?  (110 or 90ps?)

The actuator needs to be set to exactly the same length as the original.  I can't say whether it would have come setup correctly or not.

It’s the 110

Ok, so it's the VNT.  I'd suggest that the vanes are not being pulled far enough.  So you will get better performance from the extra boost, but at the risk of damage to the turbo through over-speeding it.

I'm afraid I can't offer a specific setup guide, but do believe that the actuator simply needs adjusting to rectify the issue.

Over 50 videos on You Tube about how to set up the Turbo actuator. I would expect one of the videos will be something very like what you have.

Thanks Tom and Unofix, I've had another look at the actuator and I think although the turbo is only a couple of months old the actuator is stuck as there is only a mm or 2 of movement. I have compared the movement to my running 1.6tdci and the actuator moves in and out freely 😞 does this mean the turbo / actuator are dead?
