Rear end clunk focus mk2 1.8 petrol

Featured Replies

Another day another focus mk2 problem haha, had a rear end hollow clunk since I bought the car. Usually when going over bumps.

visually checked all bushes and used a pry bar to check for play. Nothing seems out of the ordinary.

now I think it must be this exhaust hanger? Does this look normal?

I have a video but it won’t let me post it. When you move the exhaust the hanger hits the bracket.

do you think this will be the culprit??

thanks for your insight lads 😜

Below I have attached a screen shot from the video.

you can see where it makes contact when you wobble the exhaust by hand. Does this look like OEM figment?

Is the rubber just worn?

I will likely replace it anyway. but it seems odd that it’s even possible for the hanger to hit the bracket.

Your phone needs charging!

That is the standard mount but is probably saggy now.  If you want to test that, you can use a couple of large cable ties right around the outside of the mount to pull it back tight again.

Hi this is the w shaped exhaust mount at the front of the car which is part of the cat converter.  These commonly rot and break off.  These are expensive as they are built into the cat which is built into the manifold.  You can buy w shaped mount which bolts on instead of being welded on off ebay.  I have done this job in the past its fiddley to do on the driveway as you need to get the car high enough plus its dangerous if the car isn't supported property.  or get a friendly garage to weld it back on.

The OP's bracket is still very much attached as can be seen in both photo's. No welding or replacement bolt on clamp is required, although a new rubber mount might well be needed.

Replaced my rear left top mount and secured the exhaust to see if that was my clunk but it’s still there 😞

Any one got any ideas?

had springs and shocks all round a couple months ago so it’s not that

Sick of throwing parts at it haha none of the bushes seem to have excessive play might have to kop out and throw it in a garage

Possible the zip ties are too tight and made the exhaust clunk somewhere else but I doubt that’s what it is

Zip ties should really be around the rubber mount itself.  Just regains it's shape rather than potentially pulling it at an odd angle.

Have the rear drop links been replaced?  Does the hatch shut tightly or could that be knocking on the catch?

Gona replace the exhaust rubber with a fresh one

The end links look fresh, but I suppose they are cheap enough to replace and eliminate

I'll check the hatch, just seen another thread mention that

Sounds to me like its from rear passenger side

At this point I might just risk sticking my go pro in the rear bumper haha

Had an MOT a couple weeks ago and he said my front link arms had popped off and he just re greased them and stuck them back on

Maybe thats my problem, might just replace those as well

If that is a true statement, not only is that hilarious but also an MOT tester done that!

If your ball joints are falling out then they need replacing! Not greasing and popping back in🙃🤣

Reckon he went to A&E rather than an MOT station.

Hahaha I think he meant the dust boot in the front drop links
