Rear washer not working

Featured Replies

Hello I have a 2017 Ford Focus and the rear washer has stopped working the rear wiper is working fine but no water

the front washer is working fine so pump is ok nothing to do with frost any suggestions please to be able to solve this problem before I book it into a garage for a repair

thanks in advance

Can you hear the pump trying?  If not, the switch could be faulty.

If you can then there's likely to be a faulty one way valve or a split in the pipe.  If this is the case, it needs finding asap in case it's leaking into the cabin somewhere.

Front washers working only proves the front switch.   Have a listen with the rear switch pressed.

Just the normal one on the stalk to run the rear washers.

Sorry Tom I thought you meant there’s another switch located near the rear wiper

mmm... now, that would be a bit inconvenient having to get into the back of the car to operate the rear wiper

Hi Tom yes the rear switch on the stork is working the rear wiper but unfortunately you can hear the pump but no water coming out so I guess there must be a blockage somewhere or a split in the hose

It seems that quite a number of people are having issues with either the front or rear screen wash on both the Focus and Fiesta models. Most seem to be caused by a blockage in the pump one way valve.

Ok, thanks.  As you suggested earlier then, will have to follow the pipe to see how far the fluid is getting.

Looks like starting at the pump end might be best given Unofix's advice.

You might want to have a new pump available just in case you need a new pump (confirm that you can get a refund if you don't use it) as it's quite a lengthy job to get access to the pump/non return valves.

Anyone noticed that changing/mixing different types of washer fluid can cause a reaction and gunge to build up?

Yes 😧

Well after a morning of investigation I have discovered a water leak inside the car

to be precise there is wet/damp on the right side rear panel in the boot area I have a Focus rubber mat and that has collected most of the water but the rear side panel is slightly wet so I guess that’s where there must be a split in the pipe leading up to the water jet no damp or wet on the rear head roof lining so that’s a little lucky

so I guess it’s a job for the garage mechanics to sort out

Are you sure it’s screenwash that’s leaking into the boot?

Water can leak from the rear light locut fixings and drips down through the side panel into the boot similar to what you’ve seen

I'm guessing the OP only has experience of one leak of this nature, I'm guessing his garage will likely have experience of multiple cars with an internal leak. I think his course of action is the correct one for him, and certainly the one I would be taking...

Car is booked into my garage where I purchased the vehicle from I’ve been going there for my service mot for 15 years so I trust them and they advise me it is a common fault with fiesta and focus vehicles and they only have to add a new small section of pipe to the original pipe for the repair, and they don’t have to replace the whole front to rear pipe that a Ford dealership said they would have to do to fix the fault that’s a quote from a friend who has a friend who works for Ford

thanks to everyone for the advice and interesting chats always appreciated
