Ford focus mk3.5 juddering and grabbing when changing gear.

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have seen this covered already in the forums but not found one exactly the same. Car judders and grabs 2nd gear from 1st gear and sometimes also does this to 3rd. Only when on long journeys. Also swear I smell gearbox oil when it’s cold. No leak present to underneath of car.

only picked the car up last week and I’m abit gutted with this problem as the car is otherwise perfect.

car is a 65 plate focus mk3.5 with 70,000 miles on the clock. 1.6 petrol 5 door.

is this worth going through the hassle of getting fixed or will it just last the lifetime of the car?

thanks in advance. First time posting on here

Couple of small bits of information that is needed.

Manual or Automatic ?

When was gearbox last serviced, if ever ?

It’s a auto and apparently it was serviced 600 miles ago just before I received it

Also what type of box does this have and does it need its oil changed regularly?

Did you buy from a dealer, or privately?

If from a dealer, take it back and complain.

Yeah bought from dealer. I want to have a rough idea about what’s wrong with it first so I don’t get messed about by them.

Sorry it’s an automatic. Checked the service history and it says on the check list that it was checked and topped up 600 miles ago. Can’t see anything about it being changed anywhere and I have all the service sheets from new.

The cost of an automatic gearbox service would be at least £300 to £400

It may just require the system put through the Drum reset and adaptive learning cleared. You can do both using FORScan.

Thank you I appreciate the help. Going to get in touch with the dealership I bought it from as only had it for 3 weeks. Any idea what type of clutches are in the box? Been reading up on the wet and dry clutches and see they both have problems.

The longer you leave it, the less likely they are to help!

If the car has been standing around for a while AND if the battery is over 6 years old, change the battery.

The service manual mentions "topping up" the fluid.

Did they use the correct fluid?

The clutches are dry on your transmission

While you have the battery off, remove the paint from the main earth strap to the body, by the battery, grease and refit.

Also, there are two further earth point underneath the air cleaner box, do the same to these two also, whilst the battery is disconnected.

Search "FORD POWERSHIFT RESET" on youtube and follow the steps once you've refitted the battery

If that doesn't cure it then the adaptive shift learning will need resetting using FORScan (or paying a dealer)

The software in the PCM & TCM may also need updating too

Phone Ford CRC and give them your VIN and the complaint and you may find your transmission is still under warranty
