Gearbox swap

Featured Replies

Hi, first time on the site.

I have a 2013 2.0 diesel focus titanium x with an auto 6 speed gearbox that is starting to give issues. Sluggish change, clonking on drive pick up.

I like the car, had it since new but I really don't want another problem gearbox.

Will a later year, after 2016, fit my car. It's in otherwise good nick with 60K.

Thanks

Dave

When did the gearbox last have an oil and filter change?

In many cases, that's all it needs to get it working like it used to (though will never be quite as smooth as a torque converter box).

Change the oil and filter

Ensure the battery condition is good

Ensure the earthing points are clean and good

If all else fails after that, then start spending money

Thanks for the replies. Gearbox service by Ford main dealer. No help. I changed the battery quite recently. All connectors cleaned and greased, lithium.

Looking on the net some auto boxes up to about 2016 had problems which is why I was hoping a box from a breakers yard and later year car may be best way forward.

Dave, it's not always the gearbox that's faulty, especially the wet clutch Diesel ones.

I'd hate you to spend money, either changing parts or fitting a newer gearbox to find you still have an issue.

A lot of issues with these were either TCM faults (these should still be under warranty) or broken comms wires from the TCM to the transmission.

Get an auto electrician (or yourself if you know) to check that all the signals are getting to the connector to the transmission from the TCM, if they are not then suspect broken wires, which on your model, tend to happen underneath the battery area
