Ford Focus 1.6tdci 2009 Oil cooler

Featured Replies

Hi there, is there anyone that could help with a guide on how to change just the oil cooler on my 2009 1.6tdci. The oil cooler started leaking coolant this evening as it looks as though the dpf heat shield has become loose and has been rubbing on the oil cooler creating a hole. Do I need to remove the turbo and dpf to get to the cooler, or is it accessible without removal? I’ve sourced the cooler on euro car parts so I’m hoping it can be changed on its own without the replacement of the complete oil filter housing 😬. If anyone has a guide or have shared a similar experience I’d appreciate some guidance 🙂

Hi, this is one of very few jobs on the 1.6 TDCI that I haven't done unfortunately.  Given the lack of replies to your previous thread, I'd suggest none of the other regulars on here have done it either.

I don't think the DPF will be in the way, although you might need the right tools to reach the bolts on that side.  (Extensions/UJ's may help).  The turbo definitely doesn't need removing.

My main concern would be getting the new one totally sealed.  Does it come with a new gasket?  If not, I'd recommend buying one, or using some liquid gasket if reusing the original.

I have the same problem.

Did you manage to get it sorted and if you did, did you manage to do it without removing the dpf?

Thanks

Tim

Sorry I don't know. The person who would normally be able to answer this would be @TomsFocus BUT, as he has already said above he also doesn't know 🙄

For reference, I still don't know either. :whistling:

Thank you

Late to the party here but I managed to replace the oil cooler. Had to losen the dpf heat shield and use a crow bar to bend one of the brackets a few mm to get to the last bolt. Very fiddly getting 4 new gaskets to sit while you somehow put the new cooler on and get a couple of bolts in. Very tight space to do all this too. In short, yes you can do it but messy, annoying and probably more than a day's work including flushing system bleeding forever and finally refilling with antifreeze. Hindsight says take the dpf out if you want to make it much easier.
