Car running with key out of ignition, battery draining! Help

Featured Replies

I am currently having some issues, 2014 Ford Focus Ecoboost.

it started 3 weeks ago, car was still running when the key was out of the ignition. 2 days later, it was completely dead. RAC came out, told me it was the ignition switch. Took it to my usual garage and they also said ignition switch, replaced that. Cost £75.

2 days later, it was running again with the key out. The day after, completely dead. Jump started and back to the garage. He performed electrical diagnostics etc. found 26 faults, cleared them, check all the engine / battery - said the battery was great.

Took it home, 2 days later dead again, took it back, he charged the battery. Couldn’t find the issue. said the battery was absolutely fine. No further faults on the diagnostics. He replaced the battery tonight, I Brought it home, got to the drive and turned off the ignition, car still running. Feels like I’m going round in circles. He’s got no idea.

help!

Well we can agree on that 🤣

OK, so I think this is going to be a case of you're going to have to help fix this yourself.

First of all you need a laptop with Windows and the software FORScan (which is free). You are also going to need a connection cable. I would recommend that you use the "vLinker FS" which is about £32

Once you have both you will be able to connect up to the cars OBDII port and read ALL of the DTC's, not just a few like it sounds the garage is doing.

Is the car Automatic or Manual ?

The most probable faults are going to be with the BCM or the TCM. Once you have the DTC's we will be able to point you in which direction to look.

Download FORScan: https://forscan.org/download.html

OBDII

This is a lot of acronyms 😅 but seriously, I really appreciate your reply!

I know (almost nothing) about cars.

It’s a manual car. Got an auto electrician coming out on Monday - it’ll no doubt be dead again by that point.

OBDII = On Board Diagnostic port (version 2)

DTC = Diagnostic Trouble Code  -  In other words what the fault is

BCM = Body Control Module  - A mini computer that controls everything in the car that is not to do with the engine

TCM = Traction Control Module - controls gearbox

Hope that helps a little.

The problem is that most garages use a generic code scanner and they do not read Ford specific DTC's

Yes it does help. Thank you.
I'm hoping this guy has more answers on Monday, but wanted some clarify - for more understanding.
