Minor but annoying problem with Mk2 rear screen washer jet

Featured Replies

On my Mk2, when the rear washer jet is activated, the rear wiper also moves through a few sweeps. I assume this is standard on all of them.

However, the rear wiper seems to be timed so that it flicks most of the washer fluid away as soon as it comes out of the jet.

Has anyone else noticed this on theirs? It seems to me that the jet activating on the opposite stroke of the wiper would be more effective. Can it possibly be altered using Forscan?

Think the problem is that the system has no idea where the rear wiper is in its sweep.

Newer systems use stepper motors as part of a ‘smart’ wiper system but I’m not even sure if this is applied to rear wipers or just front.

Now you've made me think....

For exactly the reason you describe, I think what I do is this:-  I do a very short spray to get the wiper moving and then pause and then give it a slightly longer spray when it's on its way back downwards.

"Rinse and repeat as necessary".

To me it looks that it would be better if the fluid was sprayed on the return stroke of the wiper.

As it is now, the wiper comes up from its parked position and flicks away the fluid immediately after the button is pressed.

That would give it time to run down the entire height of the screen.

... but that would plead to the whole of the first sweep being on a dry glass, which is a recipe for scratches.

The screen is already scratched, probably for the same reason that most of the fluid never reaches it.

Somehow delaying the wiper from moving for a second would probably work better.
