!Guide! Replacing Spark Plugs/Ignition Plugs & Leads - MK7

Featured Replies

----------------------------------------------------------

-Ford Fiesta Zetec JA8 1.25 duratec 16v petrol 08-13

----------------------------------------------------------

Misc:
-Replace the spark plugs every 37k miles or 3 years

----------------------------------------------------------

-Although each HT lead is of varying length for each respective cylinder, you could additionally mark each coil plug from left to right with a marker pen (1, 2, 3, 4). You can cross reference these numbers with the numbered markings on the coil pack itself.

-Pull each coil plug out by the top of each rubber plug, move them to one side out of the way
(If you are replacing the plugs & high tension leads then swap them over, one at a time)
-With a 14mm thin walled double hex spark plug socket and an extension bar turn each spark plug anticlockwise and remove all 4 of the spark plugs

-Check the new spark plug electrode gaps. They should be already gapped in the factory. They should have been gapped between 1mm and 1.3mm.

-Carefully lower each spark plug into the cylinders 1 at a time using a 14mm spark plug socket and an extension bar
-Without using a ratchet, turn the extension bar with your hand until each spark plug is seated in place. If you feel any resistance whilst initially turning the threads then take the plug out and try again.
-Torque each plug to 15Nm

-Refit each coil plug. Make sure that you put the correct plug back into the correct cylinder.

Personally, I'd recommend a magnetic one.

Will that work on my car 😉

Just double checked, since I'm at work and that's where all my tools end up. 😂

That linked one isn't even suitable for my car, mine is a 16mm socket. 👍

It's a double hex 14mm socket for the 1.25 duratec engine

Yeah good point about the HT leads being fit to length. I was trying to make this guide slightly universal as it's a more genetic procedure.

If I remember correctly I just drove to halfords in a rage as the 4 other spark plug sockets I already had in my possession were not suitable. I think I just picked one out of the cabinet. The magnetic sockets seem like a very good idea. Thanks for showing me that.

You know the first time I ever did spark plugs like 6 years ago on my micra the rubber bit came out of the socket and fully inverted and moulded itself around the spark plug. I remember it being a ***** to get it back out.

So probably not much use for my diesel 🤣

If it was a hatchback, then one would have been less than useless, since it's an estate model, then it's still less than useless for your needs.

Them's the breaks unfortunately. 😉

If you think a Micra is bad, try imagining a plug socket stuck in the head on a Boxer engine.. 😮

Been there before.

Subaru?

I’ve only ever worked on basic 4 bangers so far

Aye, David.  There's not a massive amount of space between the rocker cover and the inner wing/chassis leg.

Right pain the posterior.

I see! I imagine you need a socket extension that is the perfect length. I assume you are also putting it in by feel (Or maybe a tiny mirror? lol)

It's all by feel.  Subaru did do a proper spark plug socket for their mechanics, but, last time I tried to get one from a friend in a dealership they were no longer available.

Inline 4/6 cylinder motors are so much easier.

Yeah but at least you gain that lower centre of gravity from the boxer engine.

It must be a scary nightmare for anyone that has a boxer engine with glow plugs. I've heard glow plugs can be sheered off in the head.

I just noticed your profile pic! Your car looks awesome!

My friend owns a 2016 wrx sti. Last year I ragged it about on the country roads near the lake district for the day. It was so fun but I'm never going to drive it again because the impulse to go crazy is just too overwhelming

Thanks. 👍

That photo is at least nearly 15 years old. 😮😂😂  Not sure exactly when it was taken, but, 2008 was the last time I raced it at Elvington.

Outright speed is addictive, but, having a nippy car can be just as much fun.

The last few comments are off topic, and should really have been PM's, before any moderators get involved. 😉
