Car Errors - ABS and Traction Control..transmission?

Featured Replies

Hi All. We have a 2017 Galaxy, 54,000 miles, Automatic.

Over the last few months it has occasionally lit up with a couple of warning lights - mainly ABS and traction control lights. After a few minutes of driving everything goes back to normal (and this isn't a consistent issue, we can go a few days without anything happening). I took it to have a fault code check and it's come up with a transmission error. Just wondering if anyone else has had this before and has an idea of what we are dealing with? Automatic with 54k miles seems really young to be having transmission issues!

Have you measured the battery voltage with a multimeter ?

  • Author

@unofixNo we havent. What would that potentially do? And where would I do that?

Although I did have it serviced a week or so ago and they didn't mention anything about the battery. Would they have checked that during a standard service?

If the battery 'State Of Charge' is low it triggers many random faults (some of which you have already listed).

There is also problems with the Traction Control Module (TCM) and the wiring on some models caused by damaged or corroded wires/connectors.

Start by checking the battery voltage with a digital multimeter. Wait for at least an hour after you park before measuring the voltage on the battery terminals. You should have a SOC of at least 70% (see table below) so that a low battery can be ruled out of the equation.

Battery - Would they have checked that during a standard service? unfortunately not.

@unofix Going to go get this checked today. If the SOC is less that 70%, should I replace the battery?

The battery may just require a good long charge, 12 hours or more with a Smart battery charger. If after it has been charged it still won't hold a charge then it is time to replace it.

@unofix Came back with a 77% SOC. Thanks for the tip though 🙂 Guess the mystery continues!

Well you can tick the battery off the list 👍

You really need to use the software FORScan now and check to see if there are any DTC's being stored. My guess is there will be several codes to do with the TCM and problems like 'Ux xxx  Lost communication with TCM' which is often an indication of wire damage.

Other thing to check is that all earth bond straps between the bodywork and engine/gearbox are in good condition.

@unofix I had a Fault Code Read done last week. It came up with these codes.

I'm not surprised to see the U0402-00 code which is a communication error with the TCM

The other code also regarding transmission system is possibly the result of wiring problems with the TCM connector.

I would still recommend the use of FORScan which in many cases will give a fuller explanation of the fault. In the mean time I suggest a detailed inspection on the TCM cables, plugs, and sockets. This will require the covers to be removed from the backs of the connectors. Also follow the cables (normally 2) back from the TCM connectors as far as it is possible. Check for damage where the harness has been rubbing against the bodywork.

@unofix You’re a star!

Ive been looking at FORScans website and just a bit confused (Sorry, very car illiterate). Is there an adapter that I need to get to make it compatible with my iPhone? Everything I pull up seems to be in dollars.

my iPhone?

oh ......... you're an iPhone user !!!

Well I'll try not to hold that against you 🤣

Yes you need to use a vLinker FD+ dongle.  Now it depends on how much of a hurry you are to get one. Ali Express (delivery about 6 weeks) sell them for about £20. Or you can get one in a couple of days from Amazon for around £47.

Make sure to buy the Bluetooth version and not the Wifi. Also check you are buying the FD+ version which is for the iPhone and not the FD version which is for android.

Please be aware that the phone versions of FORScan are not free and cost approximately £6

With the phone versions you can read all codes and carry out simple maintenance tasks like clearing the DTC's and resetting oil life service indicators. You can not use it for programming of the vehicle modules.

All sorted! Had it in a garage earlier this week and it was diagnosed as a drivers side ABS sensor. Have been driving it this week and so far no further issues!
