MK2 Focus Bonnet

Featured Replies

Hi

I have the usual problem with the lock not working on my mark 2 Focus bonnet. The annoying thing is I only bought the car last month with a faulty bonnet lock and I replaced the lock, I admit I only bought it off Amazon,  but I was hoping it would last longer than a month.

There are plenty of videos as guides on how to get the bonnet open, so that will be my job for the weekend, I'm hoping with minimal damge.

I'm wordering if many people have just not bothered replacing the lock and just use a long screwdriver, as I have seen mentioned on several websites. I'm just looking at options rather than paying out for another lock and then it fail again.

Many Thanks

Martin

I am now on my 4th bonnet lock. I fear that the cheap Chinese copies sold on Ebay just don't last. (Wish I could get a decent quality copy, but couldn't find one!). My current one is a genuine Ford one I picked up from a breaker. I'm hoping to get a few years out of it before it breaks. Yes, in interim periods I have used the long screwdriver, indeed, I still have it in my boot for emergencies!

When you do get it fixed it is a good Idea to keep everything lubricated at regular Intervals.

Thanks for the replies, will have to consider what to do next, first thing will be to try and get it open this weekend. I think I will try using a long screwdriver for a bit and then see if I think it's worth buying a genuine Ford lock, just worry I will end up back at square one again. One of the worst design decisions I think I have seen, never had issues with a traditional handle with all the cars I have had over the years

From memory, I think Ford were after about £100 for a new one!

Good news !!!

Reduced from £97.49 to a very reasonable £82.99 genuine Ford bonnet lock repair kit

Buy 2 while they are on offer (you know that you'll need it again in a couple of years 🤣)

I see if you get the uncut kit, it comes with all the bits to build up the locking tumbler so the original key will fit. I bought this style of kit on Ebay, spend hours learning how to, then building up that tumbler. It all lasted about 5 months! I'm sure a genuine Ford one may last the distance...

If you buy the Ford unit you can just swap your old Lock Tumbler assembly into the new one, very easy to do although I can't remember exactly what I did, no need build up a new one or use two different keys.

Thanks for the links, it's cheaper to buy a new grill 😂 I think the trust has gone though, I don't fancy worrying all the time if the lock is going to work. I expected the replacement lock to last longer than a month, even if it was a copy. Just tried again now, and there is nothing, turning the key left or right and there is nothing to indicate the lock is engaging at all, it might be something has disconnected.

I'm due to have the oil changed on Tuesday, so needed to get it open somehow this weekend.

You need to drill out 2 x locating pins that hold the internal tumbler into the surrounding case, then have 2 x new pins to hammer your existing tumbler back in. Your opinion of 'easy' assumes a steady hand for drilling, and a sturdy vice to hold all in place LOL

I didn't need to drill out the pins, I may have knocked them through.

I don't remember exactly what I did and I wasn't following any Instructions, I just looked at the new and old ones and worked out that it was quite easy.

The only thing I do remember is that the key needs to be Inserted in the Barrel, just the same as you would do when removing an Ignition switch.
