Hi I need some help or advise, I had some issues with my car and a mech acquaintance said he could rectify it but he ended up damaging the ECU...he promised to rectify it but when I got it back fuel consumption was rubbish it stunk of diesel although it did have  more power and my cruise control won't work. He said he had to replace the ecu ubfortunatly he is now refusing   and won't acknowledge me so still  fighting him. I have taken the car to another garage who has reprogged the ECU but is unable to rectify the cruise control and the mileage us still very slightly down. On investigation he has fitted a  9M51-12A650- BG, which apparently came off a 2009 style which had no option to have cruise control as standard or optional extra Ford have said my ecu should be 9U71-12A-650-BB..i am finding it difficult to find this ecu, could any one give me any tips etc on how to solve this problem please

This is very interesting.  The GEM needs to be correct for cruise control, but I wasn't aware the PCM was different between spec's.  I've definitely added cruise to a very basic Focus 1.6TDCI - was either Studio or Style trim.

Do you have an ELM327 cable for use with Forscan etc?  If so, ELMConfig can be used to determine whether cruise is an option on your new PCM.

Hi sorry for delay, I have taken the car to a garage and he said it seems to be a hardware issue, could it be the actual ECU the previous cowboy has  fitted we did notice evidence that he had attempted to open the ecu as the painted screws had been disturbed and it had been resealed. I cannot afford to much more on an old car so I need to get this right ..I have forscan and the lead, but surely if someone who maps cars should have the equipment to diagnose it if we connect it to forscan what should we be looking for  ...any help would be greatly appreciated..
