Drive it in forward gears only?

Seriously, had this on a Passat and it needed the gear selection cables readjusting. Does the Focus use these ?

Probably not. I don't think the Passat ones would fit 🤣

Yes.  There will be some adjustment on the cables.

The Passat was dead easy, you locked the gearstick in a set position with an allen key or similar then twisted a clip on the cables. This in turn put more spring tension on the cables and you secured it again with the clips. Never had an issue after adjustment, hopefully as simple on the Focus

When is anything simple with Ford?

There's a threaded bar at the end of the cable that goes through a threaded clip.  Have to pull the clip out, guess how far to move the bar, and then push the clip back in.

Worth a shot, but would measure first before moving so can always put back to original. What has OP got to lose (apart from being unable to select any gears 🤣)

My 2014 MK3 does similar, especially if reverse is the first gear I select when starting from cold. The car moves a few yards then jumps out of gear, I then very deliberately need to engage reverse shift  and it goes into gear.

Also looking to get this sorted out.

5 speed or 6 speed?

If it's a 5 speed then it's not a fault, reverse just doesn't have a syncro.

You normally can tell when it crunches going in reverse but not other gears 🤣

Yeah, it's a 5 speed and it "crunches" as it slips out of gear.
