Ever bought a brand new car through a third party?

Featured Replies

I was planning to buy a used car until I found this deal, so am now considering getting a brand new Fiesta. I assume this company (www.nationwide-cars.co.uk) act as an intermediary and arrange discounts on bulk orders direct from the manufacturer, but I've never done this before so I'm not sure exactly how it works. I was wondering if anyone else has experience buying a new car through a company like this, and did you have any issues? The deal they're offering is about £4k cheaper than buying direct from Ford, so if I don't buy it through this company, a new car would be over-budget and I'd have to reassess my options.

The main thing I'm worried about is encountering some kind of issue, then this company and Ford just fob me off to each other. From what I've seen so far, the company hold on to the V5C for 6 months to deter people from ordering through them and then immediately selling the brand new car for a profit, which I guess sounds reasonable.

Does anyone have experience with buying a car via this method?

Why would that bother them? They've got their money.

Though I don't see that about the V5C mentioned in their T&Cs.

Good to check for people's experiences BEFORE placing an order. 👍

No, I've had a look at this firm in the past and don't recall seeing anything about V5C either.

V5C is normally sent by DVLA to the first registered keeper, so it might suggest that the "new" car offered is perhaps some form of pre-reg.

We experienced this with my wife's car which we bought (knowingly) pre-reg with 7 miles on the clock with a very good discount. It was some time (but certainly not 6 months) before the V5C turned up, but of course in this case the car was showing one previous keeper.

(I later suspected that the dealer may have broken the terms of their pre-reg arrangement with the manufacturer and had delayed the paperwork to disguise the fact.)

Buying a new car through a third-party company can be a bit nerve-wracking, but it sounds like the deal you found on nationwide-cars.co.uk is too good to pass up. I haven't personally bought a car through a company like that, but I have heard of others who have had success with it. As for your concerns about potential issues, it's always a risk when buying a car - even when buying directly from the manufacturer.  Also, have you looked into the cheapest way to tow a car long distance? If you're ever in need of long-distance car towing, I found a helpful article that could come in handy. It's always good to be prepared, just in case.

Yes, although it was 17 years ago. I bought a top end Mondeo from a firm called Buyacar saving £6,000 on a £22,000 car. This was the start of the internet age and the firm was new then but is still trading so it can't be all bad. A car purchased this way will probably come to you with a previous keeper registered for a very short time so you will be the second registered keeper. They usually keep the V5C, in my case it was six months, so you can't immediately sell the car and make money of them.
