anyone had experience of this

Hi Christina,

Sorry to see your post. Unfortunately many have had experience  - this thread is typical of many on the topic:

The belt has a recommended change interval of 10 years or 100,000 miles.

You don't mention it you have had the car from new or what the service history is. Regular servicing with the correct specification oil is absolutely crucial on these engines to prevent premature degradation of the cambelt and ultimately complete failure.

There have been (very rare) instances of Ford making a contribution on much newer cars just outside the 3 year warranty and where the service history (preferably within the Ford dealer network) can be 100%  proved, but at 9+ years I would doubt there is any chance.

So as already mentioned it looks like a replacement engine if the overall condition of the car justifies it. In addition to the firm mentioned above and suggestions made in the other thread I linked, there have been positive mentions of the following on here, but I have no personal experience of them:

Presumably you use a local garage for servicing? - they may also be able to advise on sourcing and fitting a new/reconditioned/used engine.
