Replacing climate control with aircon

Featured Replies

Does anyone know if it's possible to replace climate control in a Mk 4 Focus face lift, with air conditioning? So instead of being able to set the temperature, I could just have the dial which allows you to increase or decrease the heat, and others for direction and the strength of the air flow.

I have my reasons why I'm looking into this, but I won't bore you with them.

Be gentle with me 🤨

In short "no"

The longer answer is sell the Mk4.5 and buy an older car with manual air con.

The short answer is YES!

BUT!

You will need to source a manual control panel from a base model, then configure manual single zone aircon in HVAC and APIM in FORSCAN

I understood on the new Mk4.5 there were no actual physical controls and it is done via the touch screen ? or is that only vehicles with Sync4

Sorry, I should have said, I have the Sync 3 'Style' version of the MK4 Titianium, and it has two knobs below the screen, which is great. It also has a more matte strip along the dashboard, which ithankfully has no reflective quality, unlike the pre-face lift Titanium and some other models.

Too many other great things about the car, to sell. Just thought I'd see if changing it was possible..

If you have the same system as I have in my Mk4 Focus then you can just turn off the 'auto' function and even further turn off the 'dual zone'. Now it just acts and behaves like a manual system. Temperature is the just set by either of the rotary knobs. Air direction is simply controlled by pressing the direction buttons and the fan speed by selecting the appropriate button. This to my mind gives you what you seem to be asking for.

Mine doesn't have the rotary knobs. And the problem I find is that it's not possible to control manually, either in the Auto mode, or not in the Auto mode. The non-Auto mode is also automatic in a sense. I can see little or no difference between the two. The 7 manual strength settings seem largely redundant. Even after half an hour the blast can be really quite powerful, say on your feet, and it's only on the lowest strength setting, and you don't have the button with an arrow pointing to the feet pressed. Never seen that before on a car. Then at some point it will stop pumping out warm air and use barely luke warm air, but quite often still at a powerful rate. It's working as it should, I just think it's a fairly poor design, a shame in a generally great car.

In the olden days, when I had just aircon on a MK1 Focus, I think I could in fact switch off the system, but that's no longer possible, only switching off the AC button, which doesn't of course stop air coming out of the vents (for good reason).

The small wheels on each dash vent can be carefully adjusted to a halfway position, which can help a bit.

I only recently found the best approach in winter is to set it to 22 degrees, rather than anything higher, then it seems to reduce the blast after a more reasonable time. The actual temperature in the car isn't 22 degrees, not even near, but it's warm enough.

Not much can be said to this, tbh. Just explaining what I experience.

What am I talking about, it does have the knobs. But as I say above, even not in Auto, it works as it wants to, not as I would like it to.

Hi David, thank you for explaining the problem. Now that you mention it, you are not the first to complain here on the forum about the seemingly uncontrollable fan speed.

If you get chance could you post a photo of the controls that you have, just for future reference ?

Dave mentioned above about re configuring several modules using FORScan. I've not yet chance to connect up to the new Focus Mk4.5 so I'm not sure what options are available, but I'm just wondering if there is any options to alter the fan speed and perhaps reduce it ???

You should be able to reconfigure it to manual aircon in HVAC and APIM, especially if there's no physical buttons

In MK4, what you call "Panel" is actually HVAC controller. Whereas in MK4.5 Panel with the start button is actually a panel (communicates with APIM vial LIN bus). The HVAC controller is a somewhere else.  So, despite the issue to find the place for your start button (other buttons can be moved like in MK4 - a side of the gearbox knob),  you need to swap the whole HVAC controller! IMHO - suicide mission.

Sorry for the delay. I'd be interested to know what options are available in FORScan.

Btw, I'll give it some thought over the next week or so, but if the offer is still open, I may well take you up on your offer of using FORScan to try to alter the fog lights setting.  A willing Ford dealer plugged into my car today, to try to alter the cornering lights setting. No luck. The technician said they used to be able to change quite a lot of settings, but now they can't. I've just posted a photo above. Not sure if I have a panel or controller. Although mine is a Mk4.5, it's a Style version of the Titanium, with Sync 3 (which I like, because it has some physical controls just below it. I'm not worried about not having the larger screen with Sync 4).

I wonder if altering climate control would potentially affect the warranty. And whether turning of cornering lights (the subject of another thread I started) using FORScan would do the same.
