Battery replacement: some questions

Featured Replies

Hello,

After 6 years of life, my battery goes below 12V, I've got an "eco mode" message on the screen each time I open the car and the start&stop stopped working: it's time to replace the battery.

Since it's the first time I'm doing it on such a new car full of electronic, having only a very old car in the past with only the radio, I wanted to know if there is some precautions to take:

  1. do you use copper grease on both battery terminal? (black & red)
  2. is there any "start&stop" reset procedure after the replacement?

Thank you in advance for your help guys! ++

1. Do not use copper grease, it conducts electricity, you need an inert grease like silicon based grease.

2. there is a thread this week that describes how to reset the Battery Management System.

A1: You can use a little Vaseline (Petroleum Jelly) on the battery terminals if you would like.

A2: There is nothing to do for the Stop/Start system, no reset is needed.

A3: The radio does not need a security code

A4: The Battery Monitor System (BMS) will need to be reset.

I am not very technical but for what it’s worth. I wouldn’t use too much grease on the battery terminals, just a tiny smear. The reason for this, when I changed the battery on our Fiesta a few years ago, I put a good amount of grease on as I used to do on our older cars.

Long story short. 🤣

Next thing I know the engine management light came on. Luckily a technical mate tumbled what I done, clean the grease off and no problems since.

Happy Easter.

C'mon @unofix, why on earth would putting a dollop of grease on the battery terminal cause a management light issue??

I've not put grease on any battery I've owned in the last 20 years. Corrosion was a problem in the days before sealed batteries. But better sealed batteries and charging systems that don't boil the acid stop the sulfuric acid escaping starting the corrosion process. Modern batteries are more likely to expire before causing corrosion.

To be honest I've no idea !!

More likely one of the battery clamps not tight and causing a high resistance but that should put the charge light on not the EML.

Thank you very much.

It worked almost very well: I just had two issues.

One with the front cover that won't fit anymore with the New Varta battery.

Another with the remote fob that wasn't working anymore. I was forced to do multiple things with the unlocking button in order to be able to use it again. I don't really know what solved it
