What's in a name?

Featured Replies

The recent ads for Hyundai annoy me intensely. The patronising way they instruct us on how to pronounce their name! In addition, Skoda, which I have pronounced 'Skoda' for decades decided recently  that the Sean Connery pronunciation of, 'Sshhchoda' was correct. There has also been a generation long debate over whether it should be Porsche, or, Por-shaa!

Does it really matter as long as people continue to buy their cars without us being made to feel we're eejits on the way we pronounce the name?

You seem to be taking it as a personal attack, rather than a bit of a marketing ploy.  You're talking about it, you're even posting about it on a public forum, all that money spent on the adverts hasn't been wasted after all.

Well, it may have backfired LOL I would never now buy a Hyundai, or Skoda, but I'd be tempted by a Porsche as they don't patronise their customers on how to pronounce their name

Fortunately we're not all that petty.

Tbh, I don't mind Hyundai educating Brits on how to pronounce it.  My Grandad spent years calling his a Hyonda - as if it was some sort of Korean Japanese mashup.

Hunday like the Americans right? 😛

Speaking of which, Ford is American. Maybe we should say it like Forrrrd?

Well I am LOL I have never knowingly bought a 'Kleenex' product since they listened to a 9 year old girl saying she was offended to the term, 'man sized' hanky, which after decades, they then dropped. I can hold a grudge for years. There are loads of brands I have personally banned because of their idiotic decisions!

I bought a hi un die then not long after the advert came out. I wasn't anoyed at all. Made me smile. Knew it was pronounced he un day in USA from my hols in Florida. There big over there in there TV and radio ad's. Kia adverts also stick in my mind.         " They want to see ya in a Kia"
