Noisy Brakes

Featured Replies

Hi ,

I've had my front brake pads and disks replaced but the brakes are still screeching when I brake mainly when the car is first used and when its a wet day. Although the brakes screeched all day one day last week. A friend said it could just be dirt.

My guess is that the protective coating on the discs wasn't cleaned off before they were installed. As a result dirt and dust is sticking to them, and when you brake you get the screeching noise. The way to fix it would be to buy some brake cleaner and wipe the discs with an old rag. Brakes will be soft until they bed in.

if they are new it takes a good few miles to settkle in and it will screech who changed them a garage ? copper grease on the backing plates of the pad stops them from screechin if it only screeches with the brakes on then they will likely be bedding in can take up to a thousand miles if they screech with the brakes offg then the caliper likely has a stuck puston and needs cleaned up sounds like its just when driving so i wouldnt worry took mine almost 500 miles till they stopped screeching when braking now they are bedded in nicealso remember after the cars been sitting especially if it was raining there can be surface rust on the disk so the first couplke of presse the car will screech or grind as it takes the surface junk off the disk face

Hi,

Yes they only screech when I'm driving and using the brake more noticalbly when its wet and when i first use the car,It has been fine today only a slight screech now and then.I'm pleased it's nothing to worry about.Yes it was a garage that fitted them. Actually someone suggested that all the brakes should of been done to keep the balance is this right.

Thanks guys

I always change brakes in an axle set (both front or both rear). Never change brakes on just one side otherwise they will be imbalanced.

If it has been raining and the car has been parked all day. Some noise is normal for the first few times the brakes are used, as the surface rust is removed from the disc surface. If you car has alloy wheels where the brake disc is more exposed then that will make this problem worse.

If this has only been happening since the discs and pads have been replaced then check all springs or clips that hold the brake pads in place, also clean the mating face between the back of the brake disc and the hub. Also apply a THIN layer of copper slip grease to the back of the pads ONLY

Were the old brake pads worn evenly?

A garage fitted them he said the pads were almost touching metal. I had only had the car a few weeks when I noticed a slight screech now and then so I had them checked. A friend said would have a look for me I will tell him what you have said.

thanks

I've had a similar but not quite the same problem with my new Fiesta brakes from new. Being an auto, I have to hold the car on the brakes a lot and it really 'creaks' loudly when releasing the brakes and moving off. It is slightly less pronounced when warm but still there. The Ford dealer says there is nothing they can do (they just aren't interested really. I am most dissapointed with the Ford dealers. The soundproofing is adrift on the bulkhead and out of the clips. I asked them to deal with it and they said "oh, it's supposed to be like that sir !" What sort of idiots do they take there customers for ? anyway it is the brake noise that is spoiling an otherwise brilliant car. Any suggestions ?

brakes will be noisy especially with the crap on the roads riht now that crap does get on the disk then the pad and takes a while to come off the groaning from the brakes is normal mate and all cars will do it just the way they are

Copper grease is a must on the backing plates, but I wouldnt worry too much, definately clean the disk with brake cleaner, and allow to bed in, I find using the brakes agressively also helps. I replaced my pads, and just went around the block slamming on the ABS! it gives it some good wear and tear, and makes you comfortable that when you need them - they work!
