Priming Duratorq engine with oil - low oil warning

Featured Replies

I have changed the oil in my 2016 Mk3 Galaxy a few months back and after about 2 weeks I got the message about low oil. I filled about 600ml to top it up and assumed that the car was incorrectly drained and the pump got some air in the process and now it should be fixed. This message showed 2 more times, each time I added about 400ml of oil to get to correct level.

1. Should I prime the engine with oil to make it stop complaining?

2.What would be the procedure?

3. Should I push the oil from the filter side? Should the filter be filled with oil when installed?

4. I have seen some crazy procedure to fill the engine with 15 litres of oil, leave it overnight and then push 0.6bar pressure into the engine to make sure oil pump is primed. Feels bonkers but I just want this issue to get resolved.

Drain all the oil and change the filter. Refill with the correct amount of oil for you engine. See the owners handbook for the exact amount required.

Thank you unofix, just to confirm, you are sure there is no special procedure with time constraints (like 10-15min) when changing oil in 2.0L diesel duratorq engine?

None what's so ever. Drain plug lets out pretty much all the oil out. . New filter. Refill to the correct quantity . Run engine for 30 secs or so. Recheck the level on dipstick and top up a small amount as required. That's it. No rocket science degree required.

Please do not hate me for digging this even deeper 🙂

I found this video of John Cadogan explaining the 3.2 Ford Ranger engine

But there is VERY little information about which engines are affected by this design change and which are not. I just want to make sure I know if my engine is just like this 3.2 in Ford Ranger.

Apologies if I am repetitive.

I'm not going 5o watch that vid. You have a Peugeot 2.0 tdci engine in your car. If your oil level keeps going low on the dipstick, it's either burning oil or leaking it. If the level is not going down but low oil level message is coming on , maybe a faulty level sensor. I had exactly the same engine in my Mondeo with no issues changing oil. Also changed oil on lots of other fords with that engine with no issues.

Do you have a 3.2 Ford Ranger ? If yes then the information will be relevant. Otherwise it's about as important as to how to change the oil on a Nissan Leaf.

I get it, thank you for your patience. I just come from the Software/IT world where lots of things are hidden / convoluted / complicated because this is what makes money in those industries - not simplicity, re-usability, etc.

I will do more investigations what is happening with the oil, but again, thank you!

I feel a bit stupid now but hey, this forum is all about sharing 😉

The oil filter was not tight enough and was leaking oil...

I have changed the oil and put new filter, also did the powershift oil / filter while I was there.

Thanks again

The oil filter on the 2.0tdci need to be fairly tight. Not just hand tight . A tool to grab the filter and tweek the filter a bit more.
