20 Plate Focus Active Automatic Problems

Featured Replies

Bit of a long story…

My company car is a Focus Active Estate, it’s. 1.5 Diesel Automatic and has been a really great car up to now.

Just before Christmas it went in for a 60k mile service (gets serviced every 10k miles) and drove it home no issues where it sat over the weekend. Headed out to work on the Monday morning and a few miles into the journey (about 6 miles after the service) and I suddenly heard this really loud banging and clattering and noticed plumes of smoke out of the rear view mirror, the car then suddenly started red lining and pulling me forward by itself which now I have researched into it think it was the start of runaway diesel/diesel runaway.
I managed to pull over, switch the engine off where I took a minute to try and figure out what had just happened and then switched it back on to see what faults etc I had and was surprised that everything seemed okay. I managed to get to a safe road where it was apparent there were major issues and pulled over where the RAC then came to recover me.

They arrived and checked for faults with DPF faults and gave the engine a rev but then it took over again and red lined with a hell of a lot of smoke which was the oil being burned away and the recovery guy seemed pretty panicked as said sometimes you can’t switch the engine off however managed to do so in time but was too late as the engine had hydro locked itself.

I never got to the bottom of everything but was told by the garage that this was all due to a failed turbo and nothing done or not done on the service. The car was in the garage for 7 months, yes 7 months whilst they replaced the turbo and engine etc.

I eventually picked the car up approx 2 weeks ago and had faults still flashing up which they put down to the crap still left in the system so these were reset but then noticed oil on my drive.

They had the car for another 4 days where they put this down to a faulty oil seal of some description and on my way I went again.

I picked the car up yesterday and this morning it has broken down again, this time all sorts of faults occurring including the orange spanner, reduced power and when I pulled over and waited for RAC they noticed huge amounts of gear box oil all over the lay-by I was in.

Worryingly my colleague took his car in for a 60k service and a day later his engine has also failed.

What is going on?!?!?! I am intrigued to know if this is one big coincidence or just very unlucky. I’ve always had Fords but this is not good!

TIA Folks

There isn't a 60k scheduled service for this engine & model.  So it's difficult to say exactly what was changed without an itemised list.

If both your car and your colleagues were serviced at the same garage that does seem more than just a coincidence.  Perhaps over-filling the oil, using an incorrect database for oil capacity?  (Though I'd like to hope they check the dipstick as well!)

Must admit, I'm not surprised your car is full of faults after 7 months stuck in the garage.  People forget what has and hasn't been done to each vehicle, different techs may end up working on it, things get left loose or not refitted at all.  And that's without all the issues caused by the battery charge dropping low during that time.

Oddly, there was another member posting about a potential diesel runaway yesterday (didn't state whether it was 1.5 or 2.0) however that was on an older model.  I haven't seen any 1.5 TDCI runaways recently, if at all.

Thanks for the reply, my colleague had theirs serviced at a different Ford garage, we were just both shocked that his car has done almost the identical same thing as mine. It’s really strange!
The break down today could well be that something has been disturbed such as a pipe or something but after all the previous issues I really have lost confidence in both the car and the garage it’s always gone to.

Ah, maybe it is just a coincidence then, definitely strange though!

That's very concerning seeing those posts. Our Ford Focus Active 2020 has a lot of issues. Back in July the car broked down, we been told that oil spilled and it was contaminated with diesel. They took car apart and cleaned, this cost £400 as not covered with Autocare. Apparently due to DPF failure and blamed on driving style. After that in September engine light came on, we took it back to service department at dealership and it was hego sensor, they replaced it. Then again after 2 weeks engine light came on, took it back and been told Nox sensor needs replacing, this been done. After another 2 weeks car was back and then they said Nox sensor needed to be cleaned. And now after another 2 weeks the light came on again, this time they said they need to strip the car to inspect and clean induction system and it will cost £720 just to strip the car. Also they cleaned MAP sensor. They did say tha Ford is aware of those issues with those cars. Just wondering if any one else had those issues. It's just getting very costly to repair it all especially in such a young car.
