Mk8 Transit central locking issues

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

My 2018 Transit Custom is playing up again, this is really disappointing as the dealership replaced the Body Control Module only a few months ago after diagnosisng water ingress. Cost as fairly eyewatering and I hoped that would be my for a while.

Post BCM repacement all had seemed well.

Recently the first issue to present was an error with the Reverse Camera. When reverse was engaged the screen was solid blue and an error message presented saying camera unavailable. Cycling the enging off and on seemed to resolve and it was fine for a bit without the issue recurring.

Last week after heavy rain I was out in the vehicle and went to lock it. The horn sounded to indicate an error and I checked the doors all fine. I then found that the all doors were locked other than the drivers. When unlocking the car none of the doors actually unlocked other than the drivers which was open anyway. This persisted for a while and then I tried to drive home and got an error message saying no key detected and the engine would not start. I just kept trying and eventually the car started. The locks then returned to normal and worked fine for a couple of days.

Cue heavy rain again today and I the same locking issue present. No key not detected problems and the car started fine.

I have used Forscan after being directed to this by someone who knows far more than me during my last issue. I don't get any DTC's linked to the locks.

No codes from anything else. The trailer module one I think has been there for a long time even when everything was working.

All the lights and indicators seem fine and I'm not seeing issues elsewhere.

My thoughts are either

1) Water ingress back into the BCM despite assurances it was now better sealed and this is causing odd electrical issues

or

2) The connection to the reverse camera is intermittently faulty. It is fair to say the boot latch on this vehcile is awful and my kids slam the door shut regularly trying to close it. This may have damaged a connection with intermittently fault.

I'll go back to the dealership but as is always the case I really need this vehicle for a camping trip on Monday!

Any thoughts or advice much appreciated.

Simon

If I was a betting man I'd have £50 to win on 'water ingress in the BCM' 👍

Thanks Unofix, you gave me advice the last time trying to diagnose, I had the BCM replaced only a few months ago. I remember being charged £15 for silicone and was told thats it sorted won't happen again. I just pray the BCM they replaced will be covered by warranty, I had to pay for the last one I can't afford £1000 every 3 months to keep this on the road. Do you have any knowledge as to this being covered? Many thanks Simon

If the part was new then it will have a 12 month warranty. If it was a used part then normally 3 or 6 months.

The work done by a garage will have a 6 month warranty.

I looked at this again, the gully the water collects in from the windscreen isn't even sealed at the corners. There is a bracket in the corner that I think may at some point have been tighter fitting against the rubber edge of the gully. It won't happen all the time but in a really heavy downpour that gully fills and water has been coming out the unsealed edge directly into the engine compartment. I can feel its still soaking underneath from yesterday.

Terrible design.

I have now patched the corner to stop water leaking from the edge.

The garage fitting a new bcm was never going to prevent this just happening again. I presume this is how water has then travelled towards the BCM.

The pther side is exactly the same and has the ECU sitting directly under it.. I had not thought about it before but I had the ECU replaced under warranty a few years ago after an odd electrical glitch with the stop start.

Not the best,. If you have a mk8 transit I wouod definitely look at patching that corner before you get problems like I have
