Tappets

Featured Replies

I've got a 2007 mk 6.5 1.4 petrol and I'm having trouble finding a tappet kit to adjust my rattly ones.  Can anyone help with this?

There is no kit.  These use solid buckets.  You have to measure the gap for each tappet and then buy the correct sized bucket for each one that is now out of tolerance.

I’ve looked into doing mine.

You have to measure clearances as you would with regular valve clearance job.

Check tolerances in service/Haynes manual, then deduct your clearances to give you the shim size you need for each bucket/valve.

Then, unless you have the expensive ford tool that allows you to change the shims whilst the camshafts are in, you’ll need to time the engine, remove the belt and camshafts, and change all the shims. Then reassemble the head and put the timing belt back on.

I just left mine tbh. The civic was a doddle. This is much more involved. I might do it if I do the timing belt in the future as I’ll already be there with the belt off.

just a quick question...would a ford dealer have checked/adjusted the tappets on my zetec s 1.6 ti vct when they did the water pump and timing belt? if not is it a bit job to check them? thanx

probably not (on their own initiative).

are they loud & did you mention it to them?

you need the cylinder head cover off. raise one wheel, put in fifth gear so you can turn the engine... then you need a thickness gauge.
