Ecoboost timing chain/wet belt

Featured Replies

You could always ask for the VIN and look it up at somewhere like Catcar to see exactly what it is fitted with. A bit convoluted but would at least remove all doubt.

Hi Chris, that is indeed a Mk4 Focus with the chain engine.  June 2018 makes it one of the earliest chain engines built. There is still a wetbelt for the oil pump which has the same potential to

  • General rule of thumb is if the turbo is at the front then it's the old wet belt, at rear the new chain 100PS manual and 6 speed auto are wet belt up to death 125PS non MHEV is wet except 7

Nice idea, but neither catcar or 7zap cover the Mk8, or any other Fords that new.  VINs only work up to about 2016.

Ah, okay - didn't know that! Old car driver here... (in every sense of the term!).

From what I have read the oil pump belt is easy to change. I think it just needs the sump off.

On "another forum" specific to Fiesta STs (you know the one), there's a thread running which suggests that on the 1.5 at least, there's a bit more to it than that. As well as the sump, also involves work at the front of the engine including removing aux belt, timing chain cover, timing chain, timing pulley, balancer shaft pulley etc, which seems a fair bit of work and I guess would make it worthwhile renewing other parts (e.g. timing chain) while in there.

Haven't seen the same details on the chain cam 1.0 though so don't know if it's the same story there.

That is my understanding too for the 1.5 engine.

Thanks for all the advice guys. Have to say it's interesting reading other threads the issues with the engine, wonder how many have moved away from Ford now.

And I should ask, if you weren't going to get another Ford/Fiesta - what would get as I mull over a replacement for mine?

I was very impressed with the Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic hybrids I test drove last year, but we don't really need that size car these days, though the Corolla is a bit smaller than the Civic. Both over £30k starting price though.

Smaller Jazz and Yaris hybrids could have been of interest but I felt they were a bit underpowered for my taste at the time. But Jazz has had a power hike this year and Yaris gets one for 2024 model year. So Yaris in particular may get serious consideration as a future sensible Fiesta alternative.

Do! Both are far better alternatives to the Fiesta. Stress & worry free motoring.

The Jazz and Yaris or the Corolla and Civic?

Depends entirely on how big or small you want to go.For me, it would be with the Civic or Corolla.Jazz & Yaris just way to small. But that is personal opinion only. Both are pretty well bulletproof.Typical Japanese reliability & quality. You could even put Mazda on your shopping list, another very well built & reliable car. Best to test drive any you are interested in & then eliminate any you don’t like.

If I hadn't bought a Hyundai, I would have bought a Toyota Corolla.

Thanks guys, will take a look at some of those. The work pool car is a Corolla and must admit I quite like it.

So, it looks like the car in front is a Toyota.

The "Mazda 2 hybrid " is a rebadged Yaris anyway, so same comments re:Toyota apply.

As an aside, an ex-colleague of mine bought his first Mazda in 1980 and has had no other brand since. He's a bit finicky to say the least, so they must be doing something right.

Suzuki also have a rebadged Corolla tourer in their range.

Suzuki swace. Bit cheaper than the Toyota Corolla . Probably due to the 3 year warranty instead of Toyota's 5 yr. I'm sure I read that Toyota keep the warranty going after the 5 years as long as car serviced at Toyota dealer

Looks like, according to their website the warranty goes until 10 years/100,000 miles as long as you get it serviced at the dealer.

Up to 10 years / 100,000 mile Toyota warranty*

Every new Toyota comes with a 3 year manufacturer warranty followed by a 12 months / 10,000 miles additional warranty, with every qualifying service*. Up to 10 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first, letting you relax in the knowledge that you and your vehicle are in safe hands.

The standard warranty in Australia these days is 5 years.

We only get the Mazda2(petrol only) & Toyota Yaris(Hybrid & just petrol variant) both have different engines,Toyota is a 3 pot & Mazda is a 4 pot. Both bear no resemblance to each other.

Hi There,

This is a low mileage November 2020 (70 Plate) 1.0 ecoboost focus I have purchased, can someone tell me if this engine is chain driven or the older wet belt?

Chain.

All Mk4 Focus 1.0's are chain.  Though that engine cover is very rare.  They were dropped from production to cut costs pretty quickly.  Make sure it doesn't go missing during any garage servicing!

Hi Tom,

Will definitely try and keep hold of that engine cover then!! Thanks for your response, was hoping it would be the newer engine!

Hi there Tom, I have been doing a lot of reading, and extreme stressing, about potential wet-belt problems on the EcoBoost engines.  I have a 28.09.2018 (68 plate) Focus Ecoboost 1.0 (125PS) ST-Line.  I know virtually nothing about cars and engines but my engine looks very similar to Charlie Taylors.  Desperate to know if I urgently need to consider changing the car.  Scared to drive it now after spending 9 hours last night looking through forums, youtube etc. Potential catatosphic engine failure problem and accident waiting to happen if its a wet belt.  Reading horror stories of engines cutting out with zero warning, brakes also failing.  I can attach other photos if needbe.  Need confirmation if it looks like wet or chain. Car looks like a Mk4 ST-Line.  Sticker on engine says "Craiova Engine Plant 07 JUN 18"  Are chains safer or should I still consider changing?
