Mk2 suede clad steering wheel cover

Featured Replies

Just finished sewing it on, pretty satisfied with it. But has anyone done something with the airbag cover, like painted it or modified it in some way? I was thinking about sanding down the texture on it to get it smooth and paint it or anything. Might be a strange idea, but i am full of them so bare with me😂

Most people just get gel Ford badges but leave the cover itself.

Should be ok with a light dusting of paint but don't use anything like a vinyl sheet that could affect the direction of airbag deployment.

Yeah, same as i thought, the paint will just crackle if, god forbid, the airbag should be deployed. I have one airbag to spare as i got a second hand steering wheel to put the cover on whilst sewing.

Interesting !!

So when the Air Bag goes off you will get a nice picture printed on your face 🤣

In the UK modifying the Drivers Air Bag in any way would be an MOT failure.

Don't mess with airbags EVER!

Anything that can speed up or slow down the deployment will either snap your neck or blind you

Nice job, but as said probably best left well alone.

Looks good but.....Show everyone the steering wheel in a year's time ?

I bet it's gone flat & glossy where you have your hands the most and looks terrible 😩

Son had custom made armrest & gear-knob - gear lever surround - steering wheel, looked fantastic and was warned the covers are not designed for daily use but show use, daily use he was advised to wear some kind of cotton glove, he just laughed at that idea 😆 But a year on he was wishing he'd never spent the cash, armrest had gone glossy where his elbow rests, gear lever went all glossy, steering wheel gone glossy around the top spokes.......Since ditched the lot and gone back to stock.

Yes Ian, the thought has strucked me. I used to own a Escort mk2 with OMP steering wheel with suede cover, this didn't show any signs of wear after several years. This new steering wheel cover is also covered by ten years warranty, so i will give it a try.

And no, just to comfort you, i won't do anything with the airbag😋
