Ford Focus 2 1.8TDCI gearbox (bearing) noise.

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

I own a Ford Focus 2 -  1.8TDCI from 2005. While driving the car I hear a humming noise, when I press the clutch while driving the sound goes away, and by releasing the clutch it comes instantly back no matter what gear I drive in. I noticed how higer I rev the car, the more noise it makes. My local mechanic thinks it is the gearbox bearing, but he is not sure if he can replace it separately. Does anyone here have experience with this type of engine/gearbox, or where I could find more information about this? The flywheel also need to be replaced, I am not sure if it's still worth the money considering the age/miles/value of the car. (120 000miles)

Given the age and mileage of the car, you're probably better off taking the risk on a used gearbox instead of paying for a refurbishment of your own.  I would also recommend keeping the DMF, not converting to SMF.  Although it's cheaper initially, it will cause issues with vibration and driveability and ultimately end up damaging the engine and/or gearbox.

The gearbox on these is the MTX75.

Hi TomsFocus,

Thank you, I will take a look around for a used gearbox. The price that he quote me for a refurbishment was with labor, new flywheel and pressure plate 1900 Pound

Do you perhaps know, if it is possible to replace the bearing separately?

I'm not sure if the input shaft bearing can be replaced without splitting the gearbox casing.
