Steering Lock Loud Noise/Crunch When Disengaging

Featured Replies

Steering lock on MK7 got somewhat stuck and made a very loud clunking sound when having to apply a fair bit of pressure on the wheel to disengage it. Key turning in the ignition is not an issue.

Pulled wheel slightly to one side and turned the key as I usually would do but it was very difficult to move and clunked when it did disengage but very audibly and more so than normal.

Could this be caused by inadvertently leaning on the wheel/pulling it as the key is turned thus the locking pin is not fully disengaged but enough for the wheel to turn past it and cause the clunk as it did so?

My main concern is of course safety and is this likely to pose any issues such as the locking mechanism engaging whilst driving?

Was there tension on the steering wheel when you operated the key? If it's not done it again I wouldn't worry about it. If the steering lock does become a problem, I've got a brand new one in my garage for a sensible price.

There was a fair bit of tension as the wheels were turned when I parked in somewhat of a rush.

Have sent you a PM but also wanted to reply here.

I wouldn't worry if there was pressure on the steering

The concern I presume would be if it crunches or behaves oddly when there is no pressure on the steering?
