Lumpy engine at 4000RPM

Featured Replies

Hey all,

Just joined the forum, as am not overly familiar with Fords having never owned one.

The mrs’ 2019 Ford Fiesta Ecoboost Zetec (only 15k miles on the clock) started making a noise which she says is apparent in 1st and 2nd gear. It’s like a flappy/ticking noise.

Anyway I took the motor out for a short spin up the road with the windows down to see if I could hear it. I could hear the noise and pulled up. I decided to rev the engine a bit while in neutral. I could not hear the noise but a little more disturbingly, the engine is lumpy once you reach about 4000 rpm, which is likely above the range she drives at, but still well below the red area.

Anyone know what this could be? I’ve not mentioned it to her but I’ve advised her to take it to a garage. Just paid off the finance on it too, thinking a car with 15k miles on it would be unlikely to develop any serious mechanical faults. Services annually at local “Farmer’s” garage. Not my choice but it’s her car and they seem fine for regular servicing.

cheers.

You might like to use this sites search (it's not that good) and take a look at "Ecoboost 1.0" or more commonly "ecoboom" before you make your mind up about serious mechanical faults.

Thanks. I did have a search about and noticed a few issues. But nothing exactly the same.

We don’t have any engine management lights or the like showing at present. What would you do in my shoes?

Never having owned an Ecoboost 1.0 I'm possibly not the person to give advice on what you should do with it. All I can say is that in my opinion the engine has a very poor track record, the gearbox also has known issues with first and second gears.

If you intend to keep it then make sure to get it regularly serviced (at least once a year) and use a Ford main dealer. Always use the exact specification engine oil and never use any oil flush while doing a change and never use any kind of additive. Remember regardless of mileage the wet cambelt will require replacement before the car is 10 years of age at a cost of around £1600. The Fiesta is a fantastic small car and is a joy to drive but let down by the infamous ecoboost 1.0 engine and more recently gearbox issues.

For the lumpy Engine you may need to drive the car and include some parts above 4000 rpm while still in gear and moving to induce a fault code, then you would read the code with something like FORScan or a professional reader.

Engines are designed to propel a large load against a lot of resistance, revving a stationary Engine does not load it to anything like what it has been designed for.

Thanks guys I have since discovered the car has a rev limiter on it. Limits it to 4K while stationary or clutch depressed. So I guess that explains why the engine kept “bouncing” off 4k with my foot down.
