Focus 1.6 loss of power from cold

Featured Replies

Mk3 2012 Focus 1.6 powershift (full dealer service history).

I am suspecting coil pack or leads so off to get a set of both today. The symptoms are sort of similar ish to my old Mondeo Mk2 but somehow a little more severe.

My usual behaviour switching on from cold is the car should idle just above 1,000 RPM before it becomes warmer. Came out today and it wants to idle far higher. Attempting to pull away, the car just loses all power, revs drop to about 500rpm as if it's about to stall. I made it around the block before I thought better of continuing my journey, rough running and misfiring. It stalled out on my driveway thankfully which is where I left it.

The thing that bugs me is no EML. The Mondeo's EML would come on nearly every 9 months to tell me it was coil pack time (IMO, the Mk 2 Mondeos were terrible cars). I don't have a code scanner sadly but the lack of engine management confuses me.

I don't see anything instantly wrong poking my head under the bonnet so I'm going with my gut and picking up some new leads and a coil pack from Ford parts today for it. Is there anything else that usually causes this problem on the 1.6 Focus that I am overlooking?

Full dealer service history? Then I suggest you let the dealer have a look at it to diagnose its issue.

I seem to remember something called Forscan. It's a dedicated diagnostic tool for fords. Look on ebay for a copy.

Really? Blimey. Well it has been a good few years since I was regularly on here and I got mine from ebay but it included the OBD tool too.

Think I've still got it somewhere.

Good of you to post the link 👍

You need to use the new 'vLinker' OBD connection lead for newer (and older) vehicles to ensure you read all of the Ford specific DTC's

vLinker FS (£33.19) - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Vgate-vLinker-Adapter-FORScan-MS-CAN/dp/B0952P4MLP

OR

for older Ford vehicles you can still use a good quality ELM327 lead (£19.49)

I can confirm that this works perfectly well on a 2012 Mk3 and is considerably cheaper than the auto-switching one.

So I did all the Forscan goodness and... nada. No errors logged that are relevant to this. There are a couple of ABS error codes from about 50,000km ago.

The car didn't lose power today, so I took it on a drive. It's shifting gears extremely oddly though. It has had a clutch pack under warranty about 4 years ago. I am guessing the TCM has gone bang, but have no way of absolutely confirming.

I guess either the car is toast or it's an expensive repair.

I think you need to be looking for a vacuum leak, check the crank case ventilation hose, that runs from the block to the rear of the inlet manifold.
