wet belt recommendations

Featured Replies

Anybody recommend somewhere in northwest for the wet belt change and prices paid?

( mine hasn't gone , but thinking forward planning )

Cheers

If the wetbelt 'goes' then the engine is generally scrap.  It's something to have replaced as a precaution before it fails.

Fair enough.  Just an oddly worded post then.  Everyone looking for belt replacement quotes will have a belt that hasn't gone yet lol, otherwise they'd be looking for engine replacement instead.

North West Engines.

That seems like two very different questions.

Not sure for wet belts.  Personally I'd want better than OE quality if available!

Ford reportedly use Dayco. I fitted one and was unimpressed how it was lasting after running a very low milage.

For my second belt change I've used a completely different brand, BGA automotive.

That’s the conundrum.. which ones would be better than oe. ?

How the cost of having a timing belt changed has risen. Only time I ever had to have one done was on a 7 year old mk2 Fiesta 1.4S  -                                                                                         £60 supplied and fitted and back same afternoon.  Those were the days.

To be fair, for the 1.0 EB it’s not just general inflation. It’s basically an engine out job and requires some VERY expensive specialist tools.

Maybe when a vehicle is sold there should be a legal obligation to give customers a breakdown of the expected cost of ownership over however many years.

When bought my ecoboost in 2017 from ford dealer I was really impressed with the engine , loved the car ! But since all the ecoboom info has come out and all the paranoia of staring at oil light I  decided to move the vehicle on and buy a skoda with a dry belt , real shame because the fiesta was a joy to drive and so easy to park . But I feel it had to go.!

Generally how can u tell if the belt is gone and has caused engine damage to the crank and bearings

By stripping it all down and measuring the clearances of engine internals.

Assuming you don't want to do that,  you can drain the oil through a fine filter and see how much metal swarf and rubber fragments are in it to get a rough idea.

Can u not listen to it for any dodgy sounds?

If you can hear it knocking, it's already too late.  But the oil pressure light should be on by that point anyway.

If it was knocking wouldnt it be loud like a diesel knock youd hear it from miles away? Mine just makes a subtle tapping sound but i dont know if thats just the injectors

Listening to it really isn't a good indicator of engine health.  If it was knocking so loudly to be certain then the oil pressure light would be on anyway.  But if the oil pressure is still just about good enough for the pressure switch, the top end of the engine can be wearing out and start knocking quietly, getting louder and louder over time as the parts wear out and the gaps get larger.  I really wouldn't recommend using engine noise to determine condition personally.
