Focus 1,6tdci wont start

Featured Replies

Hello!

I am trobbleshooting on my Dad's Focus 2008 1.6tdci which stopped starting for him last winter.

The night before I had changed the crank position sensor when it lit the engine light and gave codes on it, so of course I suspected that something had happened there. Checked error codes and there was one on the crank position sensor and since it still worked with the old one I swapped it back but it still wouldn't start.

Now I have checked that the timing belt has not skipped a cog as the car has ran 375'000km (233'014 miles) and will soon need its second timing belt change. It was ok. Is it timing on the diesel pump?

Tried starting it on starting fluid spray and then it went but wouldn't keep running without gas. Have also bled the fuel system and sucked out about 10Litre of diesel through the filter. The diesel I got out looked exactly as it should and I don't think it's the fuel that's wrong.

Now it wants to ignite little when I try to start it, but still won't start.

Checked the fuel pressure in the rail with the forscan and it worked its way up to about 37'000kPa. What is normal when trying to start?

Can anyone give me some tips on what else to try?

Best regard

Jonas from Sweden 🙂

Do you have other dtcs through obd. 2008 Focus has a couple of weak spots. The soldering in the instrument cluster and the BCM/Fusebox behind the glove box which can suffer from water ingress.
Both worth checking, try hitting the dash above the cluster and looking for water around the Fusebox.

usually generates multiple dtcs including ‘ U’ codes (can bus)
