Need help with crankcase / air breather filter

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

I just got my license a couple of months ago (@31yrs, better soon than later).

I have a question regarding the air breather filter / crankcase breather filter located in the air filter (the messy sponge thingy)

Today I wanted to replace the air filter as I came across the sponge filter, it was falling apart. I only had a foam filter at hand from a lawn mower. However, this lawn mower foam filter is a bit more dense.

I have read various comments in posts of people just using sponges or other foam-like material. I wanted to ask if using an air filter of a lawn mower is a good idea? Or will it be harmful to the car in any way? I have found a webshop online that sells them, but they're 4 euros with 10 euros of shipping costs. If necessary,  I'd buy one, but spending 14 euros for a piece of foam seems a bit of overkill if unnecessary.

I have replaced it just in case to be able to drive tommorow. If necessary, I will replace it with something else asap.
