No oil on dipstick

Featured Replies

Hello, I'm driving to France tomorrow and mechanics all closed so looking for some urgent advice please.

2004 focus, 1.4L petrol

I checked my oil levels yesterday and the dipstick had no oil at all on it. I immediately topped up, did it gradually and eventually used 2L oil. It still wasn't coming close to the min reading. I've checked several times since and it's not registering above the bulb at the end of the dipstick.

The oil light wasn't on, and there have been no problems at all with the engine or car. The car only has less tha 150k miles so the engine is smooth.

Should I just add in another bit of oil? I'm worried the dipstick is inaccurate and I'll overfill as I can't believe the oil was really that low that 2l still leaves it low. It was serviced in February so although I didn't specify I'm assuming the oil was changed then.

Really you should now drain whatever's left and then refill with the correct amount as specified in the handbook.  That's the only way to be sure of how much oil is in there.

Servicing of older vehicles usually includes an oil change, but it depends where you had it serviced and the type of service it was. Garages sometimes use confusing names such as 'Health Check' which sounds like a service but is really just a visual look around.

this may sound silly but have you checked the sump plug, i have had this before

As Tom has stated Drain the oil out and refill with how much the handbook states.

I known of dip sticks breaking due to fatigue and wrong dio sticks put in by mistake.

It's probably too late.

They were driving from Cork to France. You'll have to wait until Eilis surfaces before they will be able to read the replies.
