Circular line on brake disc, normal?

Just parked up and noticed that circular line in the middle that seems to stand out a bit. Both brake discs on either side have the same one.image.thumb.jpeg.f4a7c444f8f6cb52ddf3c8acbae0ae58.jpeg



You mean the rusty ring around the hub?

That's normal due to the strange way Ford increase braking performance without spending on different sized calipers.

They just fit a larger disc and a wider carrier to move the pad further away from the centre of the disc.

More force is created because it's further from the fulcrum point.  (Like using a long breaker bar for stubborn wheel nuts).

If you meant the score approximately half way across the shiny pad contact surface I wouldn't be concerned, except to visually check that you have plenty of brake pad thickness left.

....and if you are referring to the grove scored in the disc, then while it's not desirable it happens quite commonly and unless very severe they cause no problems.

Mine recently passed an MOT with far worse scores on my O/S rear disc.

Yeah thanks I was on about the groove scored in disc. Thats alright if its just normal wear. I just didnt know weather it is a sign of a larger issue with the brakes. I would check the pads but they seems quite hard to visually check from the outside, turning the wheel would probobly help with that I guess.

I will say I have been getting an intermittent squeak noise coming from the wheel area which can be quite loud but it doesnt seem to correlate with braking. Its gonna be akward to get that sorted as whenever I take it somewhere the nosie doesnt happen lol

a garage could get a wire brush drill thing on it and clean it up for you if you want. mine has been done and still squeeks sometimes but not as much

If you have any mechanical/practical ability, this is the perfect opportunity to start looking after your car.  Get it on a safe jackstand, whizz the wheel off and inspect the pads as above.  Putting new pads on a car is one of the easiest jobs you can do.

Even if you never want to do any actual changes yourself, proper inspection of your own car will save you 1000s over the years as you won't be ripped off by unscrupulous garages being able to change parts that don't need changing, or even charging you for things they never did!

Front pads are easy to change. It's only 2 bolts/pins to remove using 7mm Allen key or socket. Rear pads are slightly more difficult as you have to use a special tool to wind back the piston into calliper.

The rear brakes on mine are drum brakes

I would imagine it could be a stone or piece of grit getting stuck between the disc and pad would cause the squeal and scoring, however it's unusual to have it on both sides. How long have you notice the noise as I'd thought it should go away after a short time. If not you or a mechanic should remove the calliper and clean the pads.

Im not sure if the squeak is related to the brakes as braking does not effect the noise. the thing on the brake disc I spotted seperatly. The noise I was reffering to I have had for ages on and off its very intermittent. It seems to kick in after the car has had a bit of use (as it it never seems to happen at the start of a journey.) I took it to a mechanic but the sound happened to stop at that point lol.

I have a sound clip of it here just in case someone has an idea of what it could be although I know its hard to know what something is from a sound clip.
