Leaking coolant. Where is it?

Featured Replies

I have a strange coolant leak. The fluid slowly disappear until it's just below MIN. Then it stops. For the longest time I could not find the leak because it was so small. But now I see some red residue as you can see on the pictures. Is that coolant fluid? If so, what is the problem and what is the fix? If I'm totaly off the mark, any tips and help would be appreciated.

That's the vacuum pump.  There's no coolant in there.

Where you see the green plug below, that's the thermostat housing, but that all looks dry.

Check the coolant reservoir very carefully as I suspect there will be a hair line crack in it.

I really have checked it. But never felt any moisture around it. I will try to pack paper all around it next time and see if that shows anything.

check the exhaust when starting it from cold, i had my head gasket go very slightly and it used too seep into the cylinders over night when cold. on start up would give me a nice white cloud but as soon as it had warmed up it would be fine no smoke no power issues. was only by chance i noticed, if you know someone with a coolant test kit get them to check for emissions in the coolant if not see if there is a garage near you that will check (no idea what they would charge i done mine with a kit from fleabay).

The exhaust is clear and near invisible, so probably not that.
