Part numbers! Help explaining them?

Featured Replies

I need to change my speedo, I have found a replacement online but the last 3 digits on the end of the part number are different.

Could someone explain the difference and if it will work in my car?

I'd do a Google search to ask the differences between the two numbers.

Is the speedo unit you're looking at from the same car as yours. That is same age and spec?

Hi Ricky, can I ask why you need to change the 'Instrument Cluster' ???

The car's BCM and other modules are likely to have communication issues with any replacement unless it is reprogrammed with FORScan as the VIN numbers will be wrong. Also used replacement must have the mileage less than your original instrument cluster because the mileage can only be adjusted upwards (you can not reduce the mileage).

I messed up my milage I've got xxxx on my mileage and I was going to swap the cluster. Is it not as simple as swapping them?

No !!

If you know which module you were playing with, for example BCM, then you can reload the 'AsBuilt' files direct from the Ford server. Your car still knows the true mileage even if it is not displaying it. At least 3 or modules store the mileage data to help prevent fraud and attempts to roll back mileage. Resetting the module that has the corrupted information with the original software settings form Ford will in most cases resolve the problem.

Can I do this with forscan or can only ford do this, I want the cars correct millage on my dash.

Yes you can use FORScan, windows laptop version (with licence) and a vLinker FS lead to download the AsBuilt file from the Ford servers. Depending on what you did to cause the mileage display to become corrupted you may need to reload the AsBuilt files to more then one module.

My knowledge is that only last letter is not important. This last letter is going up with the time, sometimes it reflects to years passed from the time this part was manufactured first time - letter is A. Sometimes reflects some changes like different manufacturer, materials etc. Generally - does not break compatibility.

Other letters are important and is better do not swap for ones which do not match unless you know exactly what are differences and consequences.

Provide VIN, I'll check in microcat what is your designed IPC however it rather should be like your original one.

The "10849" part number is the correct number to search for for the assembly and those two numbers do not match.

You must source a BBK or BBL, BBM, BBN etc

UNLESS someone tells you for definite that a different part number is compatible

But if you take your car to a main dealer, they will fix your cluster issue (for a fee, obviously)

So I have more of an understanding on the part numbers the last 3 digits are versions so if I was to replace I am best getting the same.

I have forscan and a vLinker FS and I have downloaded the asbuilt file from motorcraft. This is where I need a little help.

I've see on youtube someone upload asbuilt files to his IPC and SSCM but he used 2 different files. The file I downloaded was just 1 file,is that a generic file for all asbuilt?

Ekm. There is nothing else. Just numbers. You can search google for interpretation. There are number of posts, spreadsheets etc. which decodes these numbers. Each module has address prefix. e.g. IPC is 720. So, data for IPC are all with address 720-xx-xx
