Timing belt question

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

Apologies if this is a duplicate post from me but I can't find the initial one I made before registering.

Basically, I have a 2013 JA8 1.5 Diesel fiesta. Its all running well but the timing belt is due a change as im hitting the 180k km mark. I'm fairly handy with the tools and do a lot of mechanical work on my old vw van but I have never done a timing belt. I'm just wondering is it doable on your own and what brand for spare parts people use. Ford quoted me 445euros for the belt and water pump kit but EuroCarparts have the kit for 120 euros. The brands are Gates and SNR and I'm wondering does anyone have any familiarity with those parts or a manufacturer they would recommend.

Any help is appreciated

Yes, it's doable on your own.  The belt is fairly easy on these so a good one to start with.

Gates & SNR are decent brands.

Brilliant cheers.

Any recommendations for a pin set and locking tool? I can find loads for a Focus but none of them mention the JA8 in the compatible list

I can recommend not buying the pins I did as they didn't fit!

I just used a selection of drill bits instead.

Ah ok, I was wondering that when watching the videos could I just use bits or some bolts to do the same job

Yes you can just use bolts or drill bits.  As long as they fit securely they'll do the job.

I did use the flywheel lock from my set though.  That one needs to be strong.

I'd probably recommend picking up a cheap set from eBay for the 1.6 TDCi.  But keep bolts or drill bits to hand in case they don't fit.
