Black smoke

Featured Replies

Hi guys my MK7 TDCI 2010 1.6 failed MOT on emissions. When you rev it up to around 3k or above it shoots out a puff of black smoke. I’ve checked all airside of things. It also has code p1180 fuel delivery system low. Not sure if this is related. Are there common issues with this type?

Thanks.

Thanks.

To add there is also the p0030 code which controls the heated o2 sensor. Seems like it that could be related?

Black smoke on load is usually a boost leak from a loose or split boost pipe.

P1180 is probably caused by the fuel filter getting blocked if that hasn't been replaced for a while.

P0030 shouldn't cause any issues on a diesel.

can’t really tell if it’s a boost leak, it’s not necessarily hissing or anything. Any other obvious signs?

surely if the o2 sensor is not working properly the air-fuel mixture will be wrong and giving too much fuel hence the black smoke.

haven’t even though about injectors yet.

so many possibilities it’s frightening

The O2 sensor doesn't work like that on diesels.  It is purely there to reduce NOx emissions by tightly controlling the EGR valve.  (If there's too much oxygen in the exhaust, it opens the EGR valve to introduce more nitrogen into the cylinders, the fuel amount is not altered).

If the sensor fails, the engine will still run perfectly fine without it.  These engines didn't get an O2 sensor until Euro 5 emissions regs came out.

Boost leaks usually blow some oil splatter around the leak, but really you just need to check very carefully and even hold the back of your hand near any joins to feel for any boost leaking.

Injectors are less likely to cause black smoke under load than a boost leak, but I wouldn't completely rule them out yet.
