Idling fault

Featured Replies

Hi I have a 52 plate fiesta which won't idle properly it revs up and down between 1500 and 2000 revsany ideas what I need to do to fix it

Start by using FORScan and reading any Ford specific DTC's

I had similar on my 2003 Zetec, but it's the same for many cars - check for air leaks in the intake path.  On mine, the pipe had blown off the oil separator (which doesn't seem to me to be a true PCV, since it doesn't completely act like a one-way valve) causing a massive air leak which the ECU couldn't compensate for.  Or (more usually) the hose just falls apart with age.  Loads of videos on YouTube for this.  Here's the first one I found

Also, try ForScan and get some live voltage data from the O2 sensor and fuel trim as it's idling.  Weak O2 readings that aren't fixed by enriching fuel trim indicate an air leak.  O2 sensors and fuel trims will tell you everything you need to know and are well worth studying :-)

Also, look for videos showing the cleaning of a throttle body.
