Ford Focus MK2 mysterious part.

Featured Replies

Hello focus owners.

I updated the pollen filter in my FF MK2 hatchback, the guy who have designed this system is insane but it's not a topic. The problem is that when everything was done I found a part that was just lying on the fuse box and I didn't remove it from somewhere. The part have number 8M5H 19682 and google said that it is Heating Air Deflector. The problem is that neither Ford part catalog nor Ford Focus workshop manual don't have any information where it should be. It would be just amazing if anybody else seen such part and know where to set it up.

Not sure where it goes myself. 🤔  In case anyone else can help, here's a picture of the part, top left on the diagram.

True.  Unless it just randomly floats in mid air. :ermm:

I've had a look at a few used HVAC units on eBay, including one still stuck in the dashboard, and I still can't see that part.

I think it's too big to have come out through the pollen filter hole?  So must be somewhere outside of the box?

It definitely should be somewhere outside the box. I just now realised one moment that on the assembling scheme this deflector placed on opposite side of the box than the pollen filter lid. But I found the deflector on the same side, on fuse box and that's confusing me.

I had exactly the same problem. It was identified on this forum some years ago. It's function seems to be to give extra support to the heater box somehow or another.

When I next changed the pollen filter I fitted it back on again.

The opinion at the time was that, if left off, there would be no noticeable difference to the car or heater.

ScaniaPBman.

Maybe harder to check with the very limited access to the HVAC when it’s in the car but does the curved cover match the shape of the round unit here in the photo?

Then perhaps the hole in it goes over what looks like a pin on the end of the round unit. The arm would then run along the unit and locate somewhere further down. Seeing as the cover for the pollen filter is right below here it’s quite possible it could have got disturbed during the usual fight to remove and refit it. Could be a right pain though it get it fitted again if it does go there and some fixings have also popped out etc

I may be well off base here, but on an episode of Wheeler Dealers, they were fixing up a Noble  M12, fitted with a Mondeo V6, and had a fault with the casing of the heater. The way the heater was mounted caused stress in such a way that the actual case broke in several areas, apparently a common fault. (Fixed on the show by the production of a custom made aluminum laser cut case). I wonder if this bit was simply to strengthen a known weakness?

It's not clear where this part fits but the Ford description says that it is a deflector.

The only thing it can be deflecting in this area is hot or cold circulating air. I would be looking at positions where air movement is present on that side of the box, possibly to protect an electrical component.

It's curious that (on the parts list) it is listed before the main unit and components. That suggests to me it's not permanently attached to the HVAC unit (as borne out by the photos shown here an on-line).

The Kuga also has the part (with a similar part number and diagram) but provides no more help. No other models seem to need it.

I suspect the deflector doesn't wholly attach to the HVAC unit but is anchored/located (by its angled leg end), without fasteners, to a point on the surrounding framework.

One day someone will spot it still in situ 🤞
