Weird noise from car then battery light illuminated

Last night driving home stuck in traffic there was a loud noise that I can only describe as a springing noise coming from my car. Shortly after my battery light come on and then would go off constantly all the way home. My wipers slowed down and was really sluggish but my lights and radio were fine. Started my car up this morning, turned on fine but battery light was still on. Hooked my multimeter up to the battery was at 12.6v when off and when the car started dropped down to 11v. No loose connections, checked the drive belt and it’s all intact. Which has left me thinking the alternator. How would I check to see if the alternator has gone?
