RPM spike and engine malfunction message

Featured Replies

Hi all

My Ford Focus EcoBoost from 2013 suddenly got a serious issue. I was driving on the freeway when I had to accelerate and when I pressed the gas pedal the RPM spiked almost instantly to about 4500 RPM and then back down to about 2500 RPM without me removing my foot from the gas. After that I set the car on cruise control but it cancelled itself shortly after and when I pressed the gas again the same RPM spike happened and the display said engine malfunction.

Does anyone have any idea as to what is going on?

Sounds like the clutch was slipping.

If you get the fault codes read with something Ford specific that will probably show a clutch slip fault.

Possibly the clutch but bear in mind the tachometer is electronic using signals derived from the ABS sensors so it could be an electronic problem. If it was the clutch the engine note would have changed. Did you notice this?

The speedo uses the signals from the ABS, but I think you will find the tacho is from the either the crankshaft or camshaft position sensor via the ECU.

You were right. The error message said there was too much slippage from the clutch. Thanks
