1.5 TDCI smoking from engine bay

Featured Replies

So back in June something didn’t seem right with my car, took it to a garage through my warranty, and unfortunately it needed quite abit doing to it. Needed a new alternator, drive belt, cam belt and water pump. Got all that done and supposedly when they were just about to take it for a test drive the turbo went, after the turbo being replaced randomly I would get smoke coming from the engine bay took it back to them and they said it’s probably just spilt oil they haven’t cleaned because they didn’t see it so I was told it’ll just burn off.
It had only done it a couple of times after it had been driven for a little while (about 25-50 miles) but now it’s smoking more and more frequently on much smaller distances (sometimes not even a mile). The general noise of the engine seems to of changed slightly too, instead of a normal diesel sound I’m getting what can only be described a pack of bees…

Until all this work was done it has never done this before and now I’m concerned that this garage have somewhat killed the car…

Take it back

Is it still under warranty?  Do you know of a more trustworthy garage?

It sounds like a DPF regen, they're triggered when the DPF is full of soot so the extra backpressure can force some of the exhaust smoke out past the turbo clamp.  Usually it's only brief though, and as long as the regen completes successfully it won't happen for another few weeks.

If you want to check things yourself - start with levels of oil and coolant.  Check oil level isn't too high, diluted with diesel.  Check around the injectors for signs of sticky black carbon deposits.  Check around the turbo and EGR valve for signs of soot.

A lot of things I’ve read up on say it’s because of the DPF doing a regen, doesn’t explain why my engine sounds like bees… it will smoke for about 5 minutes and then stop, things to note when it’s smoking;

engine temp is fine, no loss of power, MPG doesn’t go down, coolant level is fine, oil level is fine.

Here’s a video of the smoke and noise of the engine.

Yeah, that's a DPF regen.  It shouldn't be smoking that much from there though.  I'd recommend removing that heatshield as I reckon you'll find the V-band clamp either loose or broken.

The change in engine note comes from the way regen works on this engine.  Firstly injection timing is retarded so there's a slower burn, secondly there's a small amount of diesel injected after combustion, this diesel doesn't burn until it hits the hot cat.  It's the combustion in the cat that's creating all that noise and smoke.

So overall shouldn’t really worry about it? If it’s from DPF regen would I be worth breaking the wallet and getting it cleaned out? I didn’t think a regen would happen on small trips or continue a regen after turning the car back on

You should worry about that level of raw exhaust leakage.  The DPF won't regen properly like that and it's not a great thing for you to be breathing through the cabin vents either.

As I said above, you need to remove the heatshield and see exactly where the leak is coming from.  My bet is on a loose or broken V-band clamp around the turbo DPF joint.

Once the exhaust is sealed, we can then see if there are any more faults.  It will need a good regen after that, but hopefully won't be so blocked as to need professional cleaning.

The idea that regen doesn't happen on a short journey isn't true for modern diesels, but seems to be spread around the internet.  My car starts regens within a couple of minutes of a cold start, and if it didn't complete, will then keep starting regens within a couple of minutes of every subsequent start.
