Will a Mk2.5 6cd head unit straight swap into a Mk2?

Featured Replies

As title says. I got a Sony 6cd unit and plastic surround from a breakers.

Can I simply remove the standard square face 6000CD unit and fit the Sony unit straight in?

Thanks for any information.

Yes.  But you'll need a pair of brackets and 4 screws to mount the facelift headunit.

Thanks.

I remember reading I will need to buy removal pins from ebay for the old unit.

Correct.  You'll need 4 flat keys to remove the square 6000CD.

Thanks for the reply. I went back to get the brackets from the breakers.

They had another Sony 6CD unit on the shelf which included DAB radio, which I would prefer.

This had two separate small aerial sockets. The unit I have has one large socket. Is it possible to buy the DAB aerial separately?

Is there an adaptor available to connect the large analogue FM/AM aerial plug to the small socket on the later unit?

I found an old thread in the Mondeo section of this forum via google.

Apparently the 6 CD unit I have is from a Mondeo as it has 18C821 in the serial number. These units apparently do not work in a Focus.

I have read that the Focus ones have 18C939 in the serial number.

The breakers did say I could swap it for another if it isn't compatible. They had a few on the shelf.

As far as I can tell, the DAB capable units only have single disc CD players.

Not true.  One of my Mk2.5s had a Sony DAB & 6CD unit.  (But still no climate control as standard!! 😠 )

Thanks. I will keep a look out for one of those units.

I got chance to try the Sony unit I have this week.

Despite it supposedly being a Mondeo unit, it powered up and played fine.

The CD changer as well as FM and AM radio all seem to work. The time and date were even still accurate from whenever it was last fitted into a car.

I was able to get a security code from the internet via the serial number.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to complete the install as I will have to drill some holes into the dash plastic for the screws to hold the oval face unit. I will do that once I can hold up a vacuum pipe to catch the plastic shavings.

I will also be removing the plastic tabs from the surround that clip onto the top of the heater switches. These make it a pain to remove the surround again.

I have fitted the old unit back in for now. I will get the holes drilled and hopefully replace it with a DAB unit once I find one.

I installed the CD changer unit properly this afternoon. Neither the left or right rear door speakers are working with this unit. When faded entirely to the rear speakers, no sound comes out at all.

I never thought to check the rear speakers before swapping the head units.

I will have to try the old unit again to see if it's a problem with the head unit or wiring.
