Focus Mk3 Titanium X Headlamps

Featured Replies

Hi all - I'm currently having problems with the headlamps on my 2011 mk3 Titanium X Focus. So far:

1) water ingress. I've dried out both units multiple times and attempted to re-seal with silicone

2) headlamp malfunction service required (on the computer this was showing up as one of the headlamps and not the levelling bracket)

3) at the weekend the DRL led's gave up and when I replaced another blown bulb (one of the headlights, not the Xenon) there is no juice getting to the bulb (new bulb is fine - checked on the other side). Assume both have gone at the same - maybe a problem with circuit board with water ingress.

I've been hoping they were fixable, but thinking the mounting problems especially including water getting in means it's probably time to give up the ghost. I got the fright of my life when I saw the prices, but have spotted a new pair for £600 on ebay - but comes with the following note:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/165146372650?chn=ps&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=710-134428-41853-0&mkcid=2&mkscid=101&itemid=165146372650&targetid=1814673648662&device=c&mktype=pla&googleloc=9046779&poi=&campaignid=19089547614&mkgroupid=142438599285&rlsatarget=pla-1814673648662&abcId=9303859&merchantid=6995734&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI1tbHp8uQgQMVE2HmCh222QSoEAQYBCABEgIFEvD_BwE NOTE: THESE LIGHTS ARE DEDICATED FOR electric (hybrid) FOCUSES NOT FOR the DIESEL/FUEL ENGINES so if you going to install them on your car then you will lose self leveling and cornering option as the lights has 2 pins less in connector plug and light shine will work only straight so they will not self level light up/down also you will have warning light on your cluster which fail your MOT. Apart that they will work as normal projectors/hologens so PLEASE BEAR THIS IN YOUR MIND PRIOR TO PURCHASE! RETURN NOT ACCEPTED!

What do you think - I wasn't aware of an electric/ hybrid Mk3!?

Alternatively - can anyone recommend any decent aftermarket units, it's a minefield out there and never 100% comfortable using sites I've never heard of.

Sorry for the long post - but appreciate any replies - Cheers!

There was a full electric Mk3...but no-one in the UK bought them, probably explains the surplus of RHD EV specific headlights.

Oh how I remember heated discussions about the fully electric Focus. I was almost called a liar when I stated that I saw one in the Blackpool area more than a couple of times.

As for your headlights look on ebay again but be patient for a pair to come up or the side you need.

Hi, sorry just reading back. It's only the DRL and low beam light that aren't working on the right hand side.

I'm assuming this doesn't mean a blown fuse as it would affect both sides?

Both the DRL and the Low Beam are directly controlled by the GEM, later models the BCM. There are no fuses for either circuit as the GEM provides electronic protection. There are fuses for the High Beam headlights.

If it's a halogen bulb instead of the Xenon (as in your original post), that'll be high beam, not low beam.

Thanks both for getting back.

The bulb not working is the cornering bulb (I think) - when I turn on the headlights I get the Xenon projector and another "standard" light which assuming is the cornering light.

Apologies if I'm confusing things - I'm not fully onboard with names of everything.

Still - I'm assuming if blown fuse it would affect both (left and right) headlamps?

This might be a silly question - is there a way to downgrade the lights to the more standard unit?

Ie replace the full healamp units - assume a switch would need to be added to the cockpit for the height controls.

Have you got the wheel turned when testing?  Cornering lights only come in individually when the wheel is turned in that direction.

Good point haha! I'll give that a try later.

Focus 2011 Lights:

Fusebox in the engine bay

  • Fuse 39 (5 Amp) Headlight Control Module
  • Fuse 43 (15 Amp) Headlight Leveling

Fusebox in the passenger compartment

  • Fuse 74 (15 Amp) Main Beam [Left and Right]
  • Fuse 75 (15 Amp) Front Fog / Cornering Lights [Left and Right]
  • Fuse 76 (10 Amp) Reversing Light

There are no other fuses for the lighting circuits. All other external lights are controlled and electronically protected by the Body Control Module (BCM).
