Black smoke when accelerating

Hi everyone, what a great group this is...

My 2010 Ford Smax is in very good condition and is well looked after. Done just over 100k miles.

The other day i had to accelerate hard from a junction in first and second gear and noticed i had left a cloud of black smoke behind me.

Changed the oil filter, cabin filter, air filter and fuel filter over last few months but still not resolved the black smoke.

Any ideas what this could be, im thinking now possibly turbo problem ?

Many thanks

Lee

Probably normal for that age, but with that mileage, you may have a weeping injector

Ah ok so maybe nothing to worry about ?

not until your next MOT when it may well fail the emissions test.

If you rarely drive hard, soot builds up inside the exhaust, and is then blasted out as a black cloud on the rare occasion that you do drive hard.  For this reason, MOT testers always 'purge' the exhaust before taking a reading.  (Thrash the nuts off of it for 30 seconds)

If you're regularly getting black smoke, then I would agree with you that it sounds like a potential turbo boost leak.

Ah ok the wife normally drives it so could be that, is there anyway apart from driving it harder to purge the exhaust ? could i get the DPF changed / cleaned would that do anything ?

Thanks for your help

Are you sure it's got a DPF?  Not all of them did at that age.

But no, if it's being caused by driving style, there is no mechanical way to change that.
