Better MPG

Well that was better MPG than I expected on my trip from Bolton to Leicester.  Pretty sure on the same trip last year I was around 10mpg less.  I do enjoy watching the range available go UP .😁

That's quite impressive but another same time irresponsible for driving too slow. Even worse driving at the same speeds as HGV and winding them up. Sorry to be negative but I'm a HGV driver and cars that travel at 56/57 mpg are our worst enemy.

I too must be your worst enemy LOL I often now drive at about 55mph where limits allow. Of course, when younger was a typical boy racer speeding everywhere over the limit, but as an old man, I'm usually in no hurry to get anywhere, and with petrol at £1.60/liter (£7.25/gallon in old money) , have no desire to throw money down the drain getting somewhere 5 minutes quicker...

Ok Stephen. If your out on a run at 55mph and a HGV catches up to you do us a favour Do Not accelerate to 57 or 58 so that the HGV can't overtake. I've come across many who do and it's classed as Dangerous Driving. That's how Awful incidents occur.

I can assure you I'm in a minority, if someone starts to tailgate me, as soon as it's safe, I pull over hard left and let them overtake me. I see no point holding someone up behind me who obviously has important places to go with a deadline, which I don't :thumbsup:

Hopefully you're on a multi lane motorway when doing that.  There are no motorways in my county, only dual carriageways.  This means that when a car sits at 55mph in the left lane, and forces a HGV to overtake them at 58mph in the overtaking lane, it slows everyone to sub 60mph causing massive brake ripples and huge tailbacks.  Unsurprisingly, there are accidents on these roads every single day.  Very few of those are caused by excess speed!

It still baffles me as to whether people don't understand the ramifications of their actions, or whether they just don't care. :ermm:

As I say, this is specifically for dual carriageways.  Multi lane motorways are more capable of managing slow traffic in one or two lanes.

On my trip to Loch Ness on Friday they had signs for HGV's to be limited to 50mph on the dual carriageways it is maybe some way to resolve the issue.

What about other HGV drivers who 'drag race' for miles on end with speeds less than 1-2mph different? If you want cars to slow down so you can overtake why don't you slow down to let a faster HGV overtake?

That's also a pet hate. Those HGV drivers who overtake at 1 to 2 mph faster and take a couple of miles to overtake are effin selfish idiots who don't give a toss about other road users.

My particular truck has a top speed of 54mph. If I manage to overtake I pull back in as soon as is possible. I flash overtaking trucks who are overtaking me as soon as they've passed me.

The best mpg I've got out of my 4 pot 1.5 ecoboost was 50.6mpg. Leeds to Oxford. Rear seats folded down so as to put 2 pushbikes and a full boot of bagged stuff. Speeds never over 75 or under 50 (50 on roadwork areas)

So, what conclusion can we draw here. Yes, there are some prats of drivers on the road no matter what kind of vehicle is being driven...:thumbsup:

Yes, the limits for goods vehicles are lower in Scotland - 40 on single carriageways, 50 on dual as opposed to 50 and 60 elsewhere. Point to watch if hiring an artic for your tour of the Highlands!😀

But my question was do you slow down so they can get back in as quickly as possible? In my experience HGV drivers are extremely reluctant to slow down and never do that, but that's what you're asking us as car drivers to do.

I don't think that's what he was asking.  Simply that cars don't speed up when a HGV tries to overtake.  Which applies to all vehicles, not just HGV's.  Never understood why the people choosing to hold everyone up also don't like being overtaken! 

Ok, I see your point and agree with that, but he did also criticise cars that cruise at the same speed as HGVs, 56-57mph, not just those speeding up to prevent overtaking:

He also agrees that HGV's that take a long time to overtake, creating long tailbacks, are selfish but doesn't say whether he agrees the HGV being overtaken should slow to reduce the time taken.

I cruise @ c 60mph whenever practicable, which consistently returns 60mpg.  Frequently get intimidating HGV's up the exhaust pipe, which then cut me up on the overtake.

I had the cruise set at 57 and driving in the left most lane (as should every vehicle unless over taking no matter the speed)

If a HGV wants to overtake fine, but I will not slow down nor speed up, it's the drivers who constantly go from 56 - 60- 58 -60 - 56 - 60 - 62- 58 that really wind me up on the motorway, pick an f-ing speed and stick to it.

It's amazing the number of drivers that do not know this most basic of, 'Highway Code'. There is no such thing as a 'fast' lane. Lane 1 is for driving. Lane 2 is for overtaking. Lane 3 is for overtaking. Lane 4 is for overtaking. So, if you're in lanes 2 to 4, and are not overtaking, you are in the wrong lane! 😀

This is why I don't think people should be prosecuted for undertaking, it's the other driver who is in the wrong.

To answer your question mjt I very rarely slow down when being overtaken by a HGV doing 2 mph faster. If the truck is only doing 1mph faster then yes I do because of 2 reasons. 1: he's a burk for driving like a #wat. 2: because I'm courteous towards other road users.

@Mark. Those undertaking are the ones in the wrong also but more so than the pillock in the 2nd lane driving like a #wat. I've seen where someone undertaking totally misjudging the situation and rear ending a HGV.
