Faulty gearbox??

Featured Replies

Hello, I'm hoping you can help,
When I am driving my Ford Fiesta it is cutting out when I am at a stand still at a junction or at traffic lights.
I press the clutch in and put it into 1st gear then it 'judders' then cut outs and the clutch is stuck in and I am unable to move the gear stick from 1st gear into neutral or any other gear. The only way to sort this is if I turn the engine off then start it back up again. However, this happened this morning and it also seemed as though all power had been lost and I was unable to start the car for a few minutes.
I'm hoping you can advise what may be causing this.
Thanks

Sounds like it's the clutch that's failing, not the gearbox.  You won't be able to change gear with the engine running if the clutch isn't fully disengaging.

I'm not sure what would have prevented starting for a few minutes though.  Were you in gear with the clutch down when attempting to start?  Rather then being in neutral?

Glad to hear its possibly the clutch and not the gearbox.

Not sure if I was in gear or not to be honest - I think I probably was as I couldn't get it out of 1st gear.

Out of curiosity how much would this cost to repair??

If it's just the clutch master cylinder by the pedal then around £50-£100.

If it's the slave cylinder or the clutch itself then more like £300-£400 as the gearbox has to be removed to access those.
