Ford s-max 2.5t engine noise

Featured Replies

Hi there just wondering if someone could give advice on the sound of my engine

It's on 162000 and is due a service so that probably don't help ive recently replaced the aux tensioner and belt as the aux belt broke on the motorway was fine after but recently it's become  more noisy on idle and when accelerating but only intermittently, it's like a ticking noise I've checked the exhaust manifold and that's fine just not sure if it's something serious

Check the Alternator free wheel pulley, pain in the ***** I've had 2 now, sounds like a bag of spanners under to bonnet.

could be either the aircon clutch, alternator pulley, or the idle gear, spray some wd40 on each starting at the bottom at idle, it will quieten down when you hit the right gear 🙂

Just a thought; I've had the pulley on an aircon pump fracture from its centre mounting, such that the outer would still rotate driven by the belt, while the centre was siezed. Quite something to witness. (Was a Saab 9-5) sounded absolutely dreadful: a combination of squeal and bag-o-spanners.

Might be worth checking each pulley rotates freely without the belt on.

Did the pump make a grinding noise on start-up and when the aircon was off, air con on there was no noise?

I've had 2 pumps go now, i just buy crap ones new from eBay, 160 quid.

Honestly can't remember the noise now. I just remember having to cut the pulley outer off with an angle grinder! (Another delicate operation)
