Focus MK3 Micastone match

Featured Replies

Hi, has anyone ever managed to find the perfect match for this colour with a touch up pen? my car has a few marks i wanted to touch up so ordered a pen off Ebay from one of the best sellers and the first pen didn't match and they told me Micastone is a hard colour to match and sent me a second pen, applied and still hasn't matched.

Am i just wasting my time? seems this colour is really hard to match but wondered if anyone has ever got it spot on or near enough spot on? don't get me wrong the shades they've sent me look better than black scrapes but up close you can see the colour is way darker than the car and i'm just not sure how else i can help them try to match it, sent them pics of my car before they did the paints and sent them pics each time i apply the paint to my car, my car is coming up to 11 years old and like most used cars the bodywork wasn't 100% when i bought it so just trying to improve it slightly and a touch up pen seemed the better option than complete resprays it just doesn't make sense financially.

Anything i can do or say to help them match it? or does anyone have the correct shade etc as they told me there is at least 3 shades they can try.

After ten years the colour will have bleached quite a bit so you're unlikely to get an over-the-counter match. You'd have to go to a body shop or similar, someone who can do an analysis of the colour and create a special mix.

Have you tried your touch-up in any of the cavities that don't see a lot of daylight to see how well it matches the original colour?

To be honest i told them i won't mind if it's not 100% a match because of how old the car is now and how hard this colour is apparently to match spot on but i do need it to blend in at least a little or it looks awful, i have tried it on 2 different places on the car to match but also below the door where sunlight wouldn't hit as much but still seems too dark.

Just applied it so you can see the difference but quickly wipe it off again as the shade is too much out, camera makes it look a little better than it is to be honest, to me it seems the colour needs to be lighter?

Try www.paintgear.co.uk.

Excellent products. Watch CVR POV on YouTube. Absolutely spot on scratch and chip repair and shows you exactly how to do it with no bull and it's English too. I've used their products and I give them 10/10.

Currently using AB touch ups but might have to try these at some point then.

Do you guys think my car is Micastone? i mean its not silver like my reg says like on reg info websites but every company i look at for micastone the colour in the bottles etc looks way too dark?

What's the colour code?

There are two similar Ford colours, Micastone and Dark Micastone.

I just gave the company my reg and they did it all for me, both bottles they sent me are dark micastone i didn't know there was just a normal micastone? maybe thats why then? but they keep telling me its defo dark micastone when they check my reg but i will mention this to them, they told me they have 3 shades for dark micastone a standard shade, bluer shade, greyer shade, when i first sent them pics they told me on one pic the car looks more bluer and on another pic more greyer so i suppose its a case of just trying all 3? but the shades they sent so far seem way too dark? seems the micastone colour is just a nightmare to even get close to matching.

The colour code is on the sticker in your driver's door shut.  Please post a picture of it so we can confirm.

No idea what i'm looking at on the sticker though? and don't see any numbers on there that match the colour code on the companies photo they sent me?

The colour code is LB on your sticker.

I reckon it's the one above the highlighted one.  Code L, with B for 'Bluer'.

Interesting, i'll pass this onto them thanks.

Update - seems the company on ebay has gave up trying to match it so seems Micastone is quite hard to match lol, however they did refund me the first time it didn't match and sent out a replacement so even though they couldn't match it they still tried even when they had already refunded me so didn't need to, going to try paintgear like someone suggested who i explained the situation to and confirmed they can match it so we'll see...will update again.

So another update, company ended up sending out a bluer shade for me to try as a final chance and it didn't match either, still seemed too dark and way off, explained to paintgear that my cars colour is clearly a unique micastone colour or something as this is now 3 shades of micastone that haven't matched it but they still seem confident they will be able to match it so we'll see.

If this company can't match it what do you guys recommend? ebay company recommended a spectrometer machine? just don't know what to do now as the car looks worse now and makes me wish i just left it and probably why a lot of people don't bother with touch up paints on used cars.

I'd find a spray shop which has the camera that takes lots of photos of the paint then connects it to a computer which then brings up a paint code. Over time paint fades so a touch up kit can be actually correct but the car now isn't.

This is one of those colours that seems to change shade depending on the light. A guy round the corner from me has one and it seems to be a different shade every time I walk past.

Another suggestion might be to try a local smart paint repair franchise e.g. Chips Away. It may cost a bit more but from my experience with a few cars these guys can get a very good match and the finished job looks much better than you can achieve with a touch up brush.
